Reported Attacks 2000


The following attacks on vessels during 2000 were reported. The attacks marked # in the individual country reports which follow have been reported by IMO in MSC Circulars 940, 941, 943, 945, 968, 969, 972, 973, 974, 976, 977 and 985.

ANGOLA

#29 February 2000 – A 16,000 gt Bahamas registered general cargo vessel ("Clipper Itajai") anchored eight miles off Luanda at 08.38S: 013.17E reported being boarded at the bow by five persons armed with knives. The general alarm was sounded but a life raft was stolen before the persons left the vessel.

#17 May 2000 – An 8,900 gt St Vincent registered general cargo vessel ("Pacific Challenger") reported being boarded by eight persons armed with knives, swords and iron bars while at anchor off Luanda, despite sounding the alarm. One crewman was severely beaten and another received serious injuries. Fire hoses, a TV, a video player and other stores were stolen.

AUSTRALIA

16 May 2000 – A yacht ("Spirit of Juno") at 13.24S: 114.45E on passage between Darwin and Christmas Island reported being approached and then followed for some time by a vessel about 30m long.

BANGLADESH

#4 January – A 19,300 gt Vietnamese registered bulker ("Ariel") reported being boarded by armed persons while at anchor at Mongla. A crew member was held hostage while ship’s equipment was stolen.

#25 January 2000 – A 18,050 gt Slovenian flag oil tanker ("Daihung") reported being boarded by armed persons while at anchor off Chittagong.

#27 January – A 9,900 gt Bahamas flag general cargo vessel ("Gur Maiden") at Chittagong anchorage reported being boarded by a gang of over 30 armed men from two motor launches. Mooring ropes, rubber hoses and cargo handling gear was stolen.

#2 February 2000 – A 10,600 gt Indian registered bulk carrier ("APJ Anand") at Mongla Anchorage, reported being boarded by persons armed with axes and knives. Holding one of the crew hostage, the boarders stole some ship's stores.

#7 February 2000 – A 19,000 gt Maltese flag bulk carrier ("Kapitan Ivanchuk") anchored of Mongla reported being boarded by six persons armed with knives. Although the alarm was sounded, stores were stolen before the boarders left the vessel.

#21 April 2000 – A 2,600 gt Singapore registered general cargo ship ("Forest 1") reported being boarded by around 20 persons from two motorboats while at anchor at Chittagong. Ship’s stores were stolen.

#22 April 2000 – A 19,700 gt Maltese flag bulker ("Kapitan Ivanchuk") was boarded by three persons armed with knives while at anchor off Mongla. A crewman was wounded in the hand before welding tools and a hose were stolen.

#1 May 2000 – While anchored off Mongla, around six armed persons boarded an 8,600 gt Russian flag general cargo vessel ("Ardeal") and held a watchman hostage. Another watchman alerted other crew members and the boarders left the vessel in a wooden boat.

#6 May 2000 – A 9,300 gt Panama registered LPG ("Gaz Lion") reported being boarded by persons armed with knives while at anchor off Chittagong. The deck watchmen were threatened while mooring ropes were stolen. One hour later anodes were stolen from the hull.

#8 May 2000 – A 3,300 gt Danish registered general cargo vessel ("Ocean Bird") at anchor at Mongla, reported that divers from canoes removed aluminium anodes welded to the bow and stern.

#10 May 2000 – A 6,000 gt Ukrainian registered general cargo vessel ("Professor Pavlenko") at Chittagong anchorage reported being boarded by four persons who stole ship's stores before jumping into the water.

#13 May 2000 – A 11,800 Bahamas flag bulk carrier ("Clipper Eagle") at berth no 2, Chittagong, reported an approach by a small boat containing four persons armed with crowbars. One dived into the water and removed zinc anodes welded to ship's side. Ropes were also stolen.

#25 May 2000 – A 7,900 gt Panama registered bulker ("Paulina") alongside at Chittagong, reported being boarded by three persons who started throwing ship’s stores to two other persons on the quay. The crew were alerted and two of the boarders were caught. Locally employed watchmen noticed nothing.

#1 June 2000 – While anchored off Mongla, persons armed with knives twice boarded a 8,600 gt Russian flag general cargo vessel ("Ardeal"). Both attempts were foiled by the crew.

#1 June 2000 – A 35,400 gt Panama registered container vessel ("Actuaria") at Chittagong reported that, despite employing six additional watchmen, six persons in a wooden boat tried to remove zinc anodes from the stern of the ship. The alarm was raised and the persons left without removing the anodes.

#3 June 2000 – A 6,700 gt Singapore registered tanker ("Steamers Aries") reported that armed robbers in three boats made several attempts to board.

#3 June 2000 – A 4,700 gt Singapore registered general cargo ship ("Asia Harmony") at Chittagong anchorage, reported that several people in three wooden boats made three attempts to board. The crew and watchmen prevented the attempts.

#9 June 2000 – A 7,800 gt Panama registered general cargo vessel ("Chu Hong") at Chittagong Roads reported being boarded from the stern by two persons armed with long knives. They lowered two mooring ropes into the water. These were towed away by a small boat. The duty AB raised the alarm and was threatened by the boarders before they left the vessel.

#20 June 2000 – A 19,900 gt Indian registered bulker ("Chettinad Glory") at Chittagong anchorage, reported being boarded by six persons armed with knives. The boarders broke open the rope store and stole ship’s stores before the crew was mustered and the boarders chased away.

#27 June 2000 – A 35,400 gt Panama registered container vessel ("Actuaria") alongside at Chittagong port, reported that a large quantity of container lashing gear (over 600 twist locks) and other lashing gear was stolen. Theft took place despite six shore watchmen being on board.

#4 July 2000 – A 18,100 gt Philippine registered vessel ("Handy Lily") at Mongla anchorage (22.26N: 089.35E) reported being boarded by five armed persons. Ship’s stores were stolen. Zinc anodes were also taken from the stern of the ship.

#7 July 2000 – A 11,700 gt Bulgarian registered general cargo vessel ("Kapitan Petko Voivoda") reported being boarded from the stern by armed persons while at anchor off Chittagong. The alarm was raised and the boarders left the vessel.

#10 July 2000 – A 10,800 gt Bermuda registered Ro Ro ("Boxer Captain Cook") working cargo at Chittagong anchorage reported being boarded by two persons who stole personal effects from a cadet on board before the alarm was raised and the boarders left the vessel.

#22 July 2000 – A 14,800 gt Panama registered bulker ("Ocean Breeze") reported being boarded by three persons while at anchor at Chittagong. Although the alarm was raised, one mooring rope was stolen.

#29 July 2000 – A 3,400 gt Panama registered general cargo vessel ("Esco Virgo") at anchor at Chittagong reported an attempted boarding by ten persons armed with knives who threw stones at the ship's crew.

#29 July 2000 – A 16,000 gt Philippines registered bulker ("Marquisa") at Chittagong anchorage reported being boarded by around 20 persons armed with long knives who tied up two local watchmen on board, forced open the forecastle store and stole ship's stores. The crew were alerted and the boarders left the vessel.

#2 August 2000 – A 35,400 gt Panama registered container vessel ("Actuaria") at anchor at Chittagong reported being boarded by two persons from a fishing boat. The alarm was raised and the boarders left the vessel.

#8 August 2000 – A 1,200 gt Panama registered general cargo vessel ("Amethyst") reported an attempted boarding at Chittagong by persons armed with firearms. Two crew members were shot and wounded in the unsuccessful attempt.

#21 August 2000 – A 14,700 gt Liberian registered tanker ("Quixada") at Chittagong anchorage (22.14N: 091.43E) reported that four persons in a small boat attempted to steal the zinc anodes from the stern of the vessel. The crew were alerted and the attempt was aborted.

#23 August 2000 – A 35,900 gt US registered bulk carrier ("Liberty Spirit") at the Ktbdia anchorage, Chittagong, reported being boarded by five persons from a fishing boat. The crew and stevedores saw the boarders who jumped into the water and escaped in their boat.

#29 August 2000 – A 2,700 gt Belize registered general cargo ship ("Yemaya") at Chittagong anchorage reported being boarded by seven armed persons from an unlit boat. The crew were alerted and the boarders jumped over the side.

#31 August 2000 – "Ardeal", a Romanian general cargo ship, which had been held under arrest at Mongla for over one year, was reported to have been boarded by a gang of men who robbed the crew of personal possessions.

#3 September 2000 – A 17,600 gt Maltese registered tanker ("Mekhanik Khmelevskiy") reported that 20-25 persons armed with long knives attempted to board the vessel at Chittagong anchorage. The alarm was raised and the boarding averted.

#7 September 2000 – A 17,600 gt Maltese registered tanker ("Mekhanik Khmelevskiy") reported that five persons armed with long knives boarded the vessel at Chittagong anchorage. Four mooring ropes were stolen.

#14 September 2000 – A 14,500 gt Cyprus registered bulker at Chittagong anchorage ("Mana") reported being boarded by ten persons armed with long knives while the crew were opening the hatches for discharging. The boarders broke into the forecastle store and stole a mooring rope. The duty officer raised the alarm and the crew mustered on deck. The boarders left the ship.

#2 October 2000 – A 1200 gt Bahamas registered supply vessel ("Dea Conqueror") reported that a boat containing 10-15 armed men made an approach while it was underway in the Sandwip Channel, 16 nm north west of Patenga point off Chittagong. The alarm was raised and evasive manoeuvres taken and after 15 minutes the boat left.

#3 October 2000 – An Bangladeshi fishing vessel ("Shafiullah") was discovered grounded on Ghat Sandwip Island containing nine bodies presumed to be the crew.

#3 October 2000 – An 8,200 gt Singapore registered bulk carrier ("Pu Aspiration") at Chittagong anchorage reported being boarded on three separate occasions by five armed persons. On one occasion a mooring rope was stolen.

#6 October 2000 – A 1,200 gt Bahamas registered offshore supply vessel ("Dea Champion") at Chittagong (22.14N: 091.44E), reported being approached by two boats, each containing six persons. When the crew on deck tried to prevent boarding, the persons in the boats opened fire with their guns injuring the 2nd officer who received wounds to his arms and stomach. The general alarm was raised but the gunmen stole mooring lines and other ship's stores and fled when a naval vessel arrived.

13 October 2000 – A 10,000 gt Antigua & Barbuda container vessel ("Actuaria") underway in the Chittagong anchorage area at 22.08N: 091.42E reported being approached by three small boats carrying 10-12 persons some of whom were armed with shotguns.

#22 October 2000 – A 10,800 gt Bermuda registered Ro Ro vessel ("Boxer Captain Cook") at Chittagong anchorage, reported being approached by two unpainted wooden boats containing around ten persons. The duty officer raised the alarm and the crew mustered on the upper deck. The approaching boats retreated.

#23 October 2000 – An 8,200 gt Cyprus registered general cargo ship ("Oriental Ku") off Khulna, Bangladesh at 22.27N: 089:35E, reported being boarded by around twelve pirates armed with long knives. The port police on board fired warning shots in the air but the boarders escaped taking ropes, fire hoses and used oil.

#24 October 2000 – While at anchor off Chittagong at 22.12N: 091.44E a 1,600 gt Singapore registered tanker ("Oriental Dominion II") reported being boarded by around 25 persons armed with long knives from three boats. The crew tried to resist but were outnumbered. The boarders threatened the crew and stole ship's stores.

#25 October 2000 – A 15,100 gt Bahamas registered chemical tanker ("Warrior") discharging alongside at Chittagong, reported being approached from the stern by two boats. Zinc anodes welded to the sternpost were stolen despite the presence on board of 10 local watchmen.

#30 October 2000 – A 12,000 gt Vanuatu registered general cargo ship ("Pacific Emerald") alongside at Chittagong reported that armed persons twice tried to remove zinc anodes from the vessel.

1 November 2000 – A Bangladesh registered general cargo ship ("Munmun Setu") at anchor on the Elisha River, reported being boarded by persons pretending to be government officials. The master was assaulted and injured as crew cash and valuables were stolen.

1 November 2000 - A Bangladesh registered general cargo ship ("Manik Mia-2") at anchor on the Elisha River, reported being boarded by persons who assaulted two of the crew before stealing cash and valuables.

1 November 2000 - A Bangladesh registered tanker ("Shamya") at anchor on the Klabadar River, reported being boarded by persons who attacked and injured the master and another officer before stealing crew cash and valuables.

#9 November 2000 – A 18,500 gt Malaysian registered chemical tanker ("Bunga Mawar") at Chittagong anchorage (22.15N: 091.44E) reported being boarded by two persons from the stern. The duty officer raised the alarm and the boarders jumped into the water and escaped in a waiting motorboat with two other accomplices.

12 November 2000 – A 15,500 gt Saudi Arabian general cargo vessel ("Ibn Qutaibah") at anchor at Mongla, reported an attempted boarding by around 20 persons from four wooden boats. They were prevented by the crew and shore guards. However, zinc anodes welded to the hull were stolen.

#13 November 2000 – An Indonesian vessel ("Karia") at Anowra Thana was reported to have been attacked, and a number of people injured, when the local agent refused to hand over money to certain persons. The ship was attacked again by another group of people a day later and goods worth millions of Takas were looted. The pirates attacked the guards on board and one guard is in a critical condition.

14 November 2000 – A Bangladesh registered ferry underway on the Padma River reported being boarded by persons who attacked and robbed passengers and crew before stealing cash, valuables and livestock which was being carried.

#15 November 2000 – A 12,900 gt Malaysian registered bulker ("Mas Eco Challenge") at Chittagong anchorage reported that eight armed persons attempted to board from two small boats. The crew were mustered on deck and the attempt aborted.

#15 November 2000 – A 18,500 gt Malaysian registered chemical tanker ("Bunga Mawar") at the Vott vegetable oil terminal, jetty No.3, Chittagong, reported that persons approached the vessel and stole zinc anodes from the rudder despite shore watchmen stationed on the poop deck.

#17 November 2000 – While off Chittagong at 22.10N: 091.46E, a 9,100 gt Thai registered general cargo ship ("Laemthong Glory") reported being approached by a small boat carrying eight persons. One person boarded the vessel who, after threatening the crew, stole one mooring rope.

#25 November 2000 – A 26,100 gt Panama registered bulker ("Sea Banian") reported being boarded from a small wooden boat by two persons armed with knives while at Chittagong anchorage (22.09N: 091.45E). One mooring rope was stolen before they were seen. The alarm was raised and they jumped over the side.

#23 December 2000 – A 16,500 gt Panama registered bulker ("Marblue") at Mongla anchorage reported being boarded by three persons armed with knives. 60m of pipe and 80m of welding cable were stolen.

BRAZIL

#17 January 2000 – A 92,500 gt Cyprus flag bulker ("Nasia") reported being boarded by 5/6 persons armed with guns and knives while at anchor at the Sepetiba terminal. US$3,600 in cash was stolen from the ship’s safe and crew cash and personal effects stolen.

#23 January 2000 – A 25,200 gt Bahamas flag general cargo vessel ("Sun Suma") at Fazandinha anchorage reported being boarded by four persons armed with crowbars. They were seen by the watch to be lowering paint drums, taken from the forecastle store, into a boat tied alongside. The alarm was raised and a fight followed before the boarders left the vessel with 40 drums of paint.

#26 April 2000 – A 38,000 gt Panama registered bulk carrier ("Spear") reported being boarded by five armed persons while alongside the Sepetiba Terminal. The master and crew members were assaulted.

#1 May 2000 – A 8,900 gt Singapore registered container ship ("Colleen Sif") anchored in Santos Roads reported a boarding by armed persons in a small boat. The alarm was sounded and a gun was fired at the bridge. Parts of the contents of two containers were pilfered.

#6 May 2000 – A 7,200 gt Philippines registered bulker ("Gefion") at Santos reported being boarded by between 5-8 persons who stole US$2,000 and some crew belongings.

#31 July 2000 – A 26,600 gt Brazilian registered tanker ("Itajuba") reported being boarded by one armed person while at anchor on the Amazon (Fazendinha). He was seen by the crew and the alarm raised.

#6 November 2000 – A 12,100 gt UK flag chemical tanker ("Stolt Kent") reported being boarded by five armed persons who attacked the cargo control room and the crew accommodation area. The crew were held at gun point while their cabins were ransacked. Crew personal belongings and ship’s cash were stolen.

#24 November 2000 – A 8,900 gt Cyprus registered general cargo vessel ("Socrates") alongside at Santos reported being boarded by seven persons armed with revolvers and knives. The master and crew were assaulted and robbed at gun point of US$7,700 and some personal effects before the boarders left in a small speedy boat.

#2 December 2000 – A Singapore registered bulker ("President") at Fazendinha anchorage, Santana, reported that three persons armed with knives and guns were seen on the forecastle. Ship’s stores were stolen.

CAMEROON

#23 June 2000 – A 2,000 gt Danish registered general cargo vessel ("Scan Eagle") reported being boarded by several armed men while alongside at Douala. Three crew men were held captive while drums of paint were stolen.

#5 September 2000 – An 8,000 gt Iranian registered general cargo ship ("Eco Ekram") reported that four armed persons boarded the vessel while it was alongside at Douala and stole drums of lubricating oil.

COLOMBIA

#19 September 2000 – A 14,900 gt Cyprus registered container ship ("CSAV Charleston"), while on passage off Cartegena, reported being approached by a motor boat with four armed men on board, two of whom were armed with rifles. The crew was mustered on deck and a searchlight was trained on the boat which veered off.

CONGO

#24 February 2000 - A 14,200 gt Cypriot flag bulk carrier ("Holy Island") unloading rice at Berth 9 in Matadi, Congo, reported being boarded by a mob of around 100 people who pushed past the locally hired watchman and began to steal anything left on the deck. Some tried to steal rice from holds. The alarm was raised and the crew managed to evict the intruders.

COTE D’IVOIRE

#21 January 2000 – A 6,285 gt Danish general cargo vessel ("Arktis Mariner") reported being boarded by two armed persons at Abidjan inner anchorage. A crew member was attacked and his shoes, watch and walkie-talkie stolen. After trying to force the crew member to get them access to the accommodation area they tried to steal a mooring rope. This was secured by chains and padlock so they were unsuccessful. The crew member was tied up and they left the ship.

#18 April 2000 – An Egyptian registered container vessel ("Ras Dinelsen") at Abidjan reported that armed persons cut the mooring ropes while the vessel was loading and that crew accommodation was ransacked.

#2 June 2000 – A 9,100 gt Bahamas registered tanker ("Dubai Pride") at Abidjan reported being boarded by armed persons from wooden boats. The duty AB was attacked and seriously wounded in the hand, requiring hospitalisation. Ship's stores were stolen.

15 October 2000 – A Maltese registered container vessel alongside at Abidjan reported being boarded by a person who stole ship’s property before leaving in a small boat.

6 November 2000 – A general cargo vessel at anchor off Abidjan reported being boarded via the anchor chain by four heavily armed persons who threatened to kill the watchman as they stole ship’s property.

December 2000 – A 4,000 gt Russian flag bulker ("Nikolay Kantemir") reported being boarded by 10 armed persons while alongside quay 17 at Abidjan. Two drums of colourant were stolen.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

#6 April 2000 – A 9,400 gt Italian registered tanker ("Pietro Barbaro") reported being boarded by persons armed with knives while berthed at Rio Haina. Three crew members were taken hostage while ship’s equipment and crew valuables were stolen.

#29 June 2000 – A 6,700 gt St Vincent registered bulk carrier ("Ilga") at Rio Haina reported being boarded by persons gaining access to the bridge via the port window. Despite the presence of two navy security guards on board, communication equipment and ship's signalling flares were stolen. 

9 October 2000 – A 13,000 gt Cyprus registered multi-purpose vessel ("Atlantic Pioneer") alongside at Rio Haina reported being boarded from a small boat by persons armed with knives. The alarm was raised and the boarders left the vessel.

7 November 2000 – A vessel alongside at Rio Haina reported being boarded by six persons who climbed a bamboo ladder. They broke into the bridge and engine room where they tied up the duty engineer. They were seen and the alarm was raised and they jumped over the side.

ECUADOR

5 January 2000 – A 9,800 gt Bahamas registered reefer ("Arctic Dawn") at Guayaquil anchorage reported being boarded by five persons armed with guns and knives. Holding the crew at gun point in the accommodation area, the borders stole ship’s stores before leaving in two blue open boats.

#31 March 2000 – A 18,000 gt Liberian registered container vessel ("P&O Nedlloyd Chile") reported being boarded by armed persons while at anchor off Guayaquil. An attempt to steal from containers was prevented by the crew.

#19 April 2000 - A 7,300 gt Panama registered container ship ("White Mountain") reported being boarded via the anchor chain while at anchor off Guayaquil at 02.47S: 080.26W. Drums of paint and mooring ropes were taken from the forecastle store. The alarm was sounded and the boarders left the vessel without the mooring ropes.

#27 April 2000 – A 14,000 gt Cypriot flag container ship ("Nordpartner") reported being boarded by three persons in the Estero Salado channel during its approach to Guayaquil. Parts of the contents of four containers were stolen.

#1 May 2000 – A 9800 gt Bahamas registered reefer vessel "Arctic Dawn", anchored off Guayaquil reported being boarded by five armed persons, at least one of whom carried a gun, who broke into the ship’s stores and stole paint, maintenance and safety equipment while the gunman fired at the accommodation area.

#2 June 2000 – A 18,000 gt Liberian registered general cargo ship ("MSC Andes"), underway off Guayaquil, reported being approached shortly after midnight by a boat containing 12 men. The ship’s light was directed at the boat which veered off.

#2 June 2000 – A 18,900 gt US registered containership ("Maersk Tennessee") reported that armed persons boarded the vessel while underway near Guayaquil. Property was stolen from crew accommodation and from containers.

#3 July 2000 – A 6,400 gt Maltese registered reefer ("Minnesota") reported being boarded by around 20 persons armed with handguns at Puerto Bolivar anchorage. One crew member was shot and wounded.

#12 July 2000 – A 7200 gt Norwegian registered reefer ("Consensus Reefer") reported being boarded by four persons armed with knives at Guayaquil anchorage. After one of the crew was threatened, the forecastle store was broken into and electrical equipment, tools, paint and a life raft stolen.

#2 September 2000 – A reefer under way at 02.03S: 080.21W reported being fired at from a small boat. No boarding attempt was made.

4 September 2000 – A tanker discharging cargo at Callao reported being boarded by two persons armed with guns and knives who stole two mooring ropes, life buoys and fire hoses.

#18 September 2000 – A 11,300 gt Dutch registered reefer ("Honolulu") approaching Guayaquil reported being boarded by persons who shot at a watchman who raised the alarm. A life raft was stolen.

#4 October 2000 – A 2,800 gt German registered container vessel ("CCNI Ancud") underway in the Guayaquil anchorage area reported being approached by a small boat carrying armed persons. The alarm was raised and no boarding was attempted.

#12 October 2000 – A 14,600 gt Cyprus registered container vessel ("Cielo de Chile") reported being approached by two motor boats, each carrying seven armed persons, while nearing the Guayaquil Data Sea Buoy and awaiting the arrival of a pilot. As the pilot boat also approached the other boats left, although a gun shot was heard.

#30 October 2000 – A 24,000 gt German registered container ship ("CSAV Taipei") reported more than seven armed persons from two boats boarded the vessel at Guayaquil. Shots were fired at the crew and two containers opened and some of the contents stolen.

8 November 2000 – A container vessel at anchor 5 miles from the Guayaquil sea buoy, reported being boarded by 12 persons who opened four containers.

EGYPT

#23 January 2000 – Three persons climbed the anchor chain of a 31,200 gt German flag container vessel ("Contship Champion") from a motor launch in Suez outer anchorage at 29.50N: 043.33E. They were seen removing stores from the forecastle locker by the crew.

EQUATORIAL GUINEA

10 November 2000 – A 5,800 gt Lithuanian registered fish carrier ("Rytas"), on passage from Mauretania to Douala, was intercepted by a fast patrol vessel outside Equatorial Guinea territorial waters at 03.50N: 8.29E and forced to go to Malabo on Bioko Island (ex Fernando Po). The officers were detained at a military base. Electronic and other equipment was removed from the ship and its cargo of 2,600 tones of frozen fish was removed by the military and sold in local markets. (Equatorial Guinea recently took delivery of two fast patrol boats.) The Equatorial Guinea Ministry of Defence were reported to have declared that the vessel had been "captured" by its navy and was now considered a "war trophy".

GABON

#4 September 2000 – A 26,100 gt Hong Kong, China registered bulker ("Great Peace") reported being boarded by armed persons while alongside at Owendo. When spotted by the crew, the boarders fled but one was detained and handed over to the port authorities.

4 November 2000 – A 26,000 gt Panama registered bulker ("Aztlan") reported being boarded by six persons while at anchor off Owendo. They were seen by the officer on watch who raised the alarm and the boarders fled empty handed.

#1 December 2000 – A 26,100 gt Hong Kong, China registered bulker ("Great Happy") alongside at Owendo, reported two persons boarding the vessel. The duty officer raised alarm and mustered the crew. Two mooring ropes were stolen before the persons jumped overboard.

GHANA

#29 August 2000 – A 8,900 gt Panama registered general cargo ship ("Dawn") reported an attempt by around ten armed persons to board the vessel at Tema anchorage. The alarm was raised and the attempt was aborted.

#28 September 2000 – A 16,300 gt Cyprus registered container ship ("Carina Challenger") at anchor at Tema reported that a small boat carrying armed persons approached twice, each time being deterred by the raising of the alarm.

GREECE

27 July 2000 – A Greek yacht ("Erato") at anchor at Piraeus was boarded by a gunman who threatened the master and his family and demanded that the yacht be sailed to Morocco. The Coastguard were alerted and a gun battle ensued with one coastguard officer shot and the gunman wounded before the hostages were rescued.

GUATEMALA

#30 May 2000 – A small passenger vessel ("Maria Estela") on passage from Guatemala to Belize was reported to have been highjacked by three of the crew. At least five persons on board were killed. The vessel remains missing.

GUINEA

#2 July 2000 – A 11,600 dwt Maltese general cargo vessel ("Venezia") alongside at Conakry reported being boarded by armed men while discharging bagged rice. The crew turned fire hoses on them, at which point shots were fired at the crew. .

#28 July 2000 – An 18,200 gt Portuguese flag tanker ("Alvelos") at anchor off Conakry at 09.09N: 013.48W reported being boarded by persons armed with machine guns. They took a crew member hostage and stole cash and crew personal effects.

#15 August 2000 – A 17,300 gt Panama registered bulker ("Progreso 1") at anchor off Conakry reported being approached by a boat containing nine persons armed with shotguns who attempted, without success once the alarm was raised, to board.

#28 August 2000 – A 17,300 gt Panama registered bulker (Progresso I") discharging cargo alongside at Conakry, reported being boarded via the mooring lines by three persons armed with knives who threatened the chief officer. Although the alarm was raised, two barrels of lub oil were stolen.

#5 November 2000 – A 4,000 gt Maltese registered general cargo vessel ("Torm Alexandra") off Conakry at 9.10N: 013.45W reported being boarded by between 8-10 persons armed with machine guns. US$3,500 in cash ship’s property and crew personal belongings were stolen.

GUYANA

#12 September 2000 – A 21,500 gt Bermuda registered bulker ("Northern Venture") at Everton wharf, New Amsterdam, reported being boarded by five persons armed with guns and knives. They broke into the paint locker, stole several hundred litres of paint and escaped in a boat.

HAITI

#16 May 2000 – An inshore ferry ("Gonive Enfleche") was hijacked by ten armed policemen after it had sailed from Port-au-Prince. The master and mate were tied up and vessel ordered to sail to the USA where the policemen intended to apply for asylum. The vessel ran out of fuel off the Bahamas and was intercepted by the US Coast Guard.

HONDURAS

#29 March 2000 – A 13 year old boy was shot in the stomach when a US registered yacht was attacked 50 miles off the Gracias a Dios peninsula.

HONG KONG, CHINA

#5 February 2000 - A 16 700 gt Singapore registered container vessel ("Kota Wangsa") at Western Anchorage no. 2, reported being boarded by armed persons. Ten containers on deck were forced open and Ethyl Butyrate stolen.

26 May 2000 – The crew of a Hong Kong, China registered fishing vessel off Sai Kung was attacked and thrown overboard as their boat was stolen.

INDIA

5 February 2000 – A 15,900 gt Singapore registered bulk carrier ("Asean Success") anchored off Kandla (22.48N: 070.05E) reported being boarded by 12 persons who stole a quantity of ship’s stores before leaving the vessel.

#22 February 2000 – A chemical tanker ("O-Violet") loading cargo alongside Jetty No 2 at Kandla reported being boarded by fifteen people armed with long knives/stones. The crew raised the alarm but ship's stores were stolen.

12 March 2000 – A 34,600 gt Dutch registered bulker ("Robert Stove") at anchor at Chennai, reported an attempted boarding which was prevented by the crew.

#20 March 2000 – A vessel at anchor at Chennai (Madras) outer anchorage reported an attempted boarding by five persons armed with knives. A duty watchman spotted the attempt and the persons left in a small wooden boat.

#19 April 2000 – A 27,600 Greek flag tanker ("Hellas Fos") moored to a buoy at Vishakhapatnam was approached by a small boat containing persons armed with long knives. The mooring rope was cut and stolen.

#24 April 2000 – Six persons tried to board a 6,800 gt Antigua and Barbuda registered container vessel ("Starlight") from a small boat via the anchor chain at Chennai (Madras) anchorage. The crew was alerted and prevented the boarding.

#29 April 2000 – A 1,400 gt St Vincent registered general cargo vessel ("Oriental Peony") berthed at Kakinada, India, was boarded by persons armed with knives. Ship’s stores were stolen.

#1 May 2000 – The duty watchman on the 22,100 gt St Vincent registered bulk carrier "Orientor" at Chennai (Madras) anchorage noticed an unlit craft approaching from ahead. He alerted the watchman at the stern who joined him. Meanwhile, another group of pirates boarded the vessel from stern and stole a portable aluminium gangway.

#10 May 2000 – A 34,600 gt Dutch registered bulk carrier ("Robert Stove") at Chennai (Madras) anchorage, reported being boarded from the stern by one person. He was noticed by the duty officer and jumped overboard and fled in a waiting craft with six other people in it. Ship's stores were stolen.

#10 May 2000 – A 28,200 gt Indian flag bulker ("Gem of Vadag") at Chennai anchorage reported being boarded from the stern by one armed person. Ship’s stores were stolen before the boarder was seen. He then jumped over the side to be picked up by a boat carrying six other armed persons.

#16 May 2000 – A 12,500 gt Singapore registered container vessel ("Kota Sabas") at anchor at Madras, reported being boarded by two persons. The alarm was raised and the boarders left the vessel.

#23 May 2000 – A 37,900 gt Indian registered tanker ("Major Shaitan Singh PVC") reported being boarded while alongside at Cochin oil terminal. Ship’s stores were stolen.

#3 June 2000 - A 9,900 gt Iranian registered general cargo ship ("Iran Vojdan") at Chennai anchorage, (Madras) reported that ten people in two unlit boats tried to board from the stern. The watchman noticed the boats and informed the bridge. The crew were alerted and the attempt was aborted.

3 June 2000 – A tanker discharging diesel at Kandla reported that its oil line was tampered with, causing a substantial spill.

#6 June 2000 – A 6,700 gt Netherlands Antilles registered heavy lift vessel ("Transporter") reported being boarded by three persons from a speed boat while around 4 NM off the breakwater at Chennai (Madras). They tried to gain access to the accommodation but were seen by the duty AB and the alarm raised. The crew were mustered and the boarders left the vessel to their boat which made off to seaward.

#16 July 2000 – A 34,700 gt NIS registered bulker ("Robert Stove") at Chennai Anchorage (13:04N - 080:22E), Madras, reported being boarded by two persons from a motor boat who threw a line with a hook attached over the ship’s rail. They tried to steal ship’s stores but were seen and the alarm was raised. The boarders jumped over the side back into their boat.

#18 July 2000 - A 4,300 gt Singapore registered chemical tanker ("Jurong") at Chennai anchorage (Madras) reported being boarded by two persons who tried to steal ship's stores. They were spotted by the anti piracy watch and escaped in a motorboat with three other accomplices. Nothing was stolen.

#22 July 2000 – A 5,300 Hong Kong, China registered chemical tanker ("Sea Power") at Chennai anchorage (13.06N: 080.20E), reported being boarded by one person who tried to steal some ship’s stores. He was noticed by the crew who raised the alarm. The person jumped over board and escaped in a waiting motor boat taking with him two fire hoses.

#1 August 2000 – A 48,600 gt Maltese registered tanker ("Cloud") at anchor off Cochin reported being boarded by eight persons via the anchor chain. The alarm was raised and crew mustered at emergency stations. The boarders left, stealing one mooring rope.

#14 August 2000 – A 12,300 gt Indian flag tanker ("Nand Kishore") at Cochin anchorage (10.01N: 076.05E) reported being boarded by three persons who took a crew member hostage, threatening him with a knife. The duty officer on the bridge suspected something was wrong, raised the alarm and the ship's crew mustered on the deck. The boarders left the vessel in a small wooden boat with two mooring lines.

15 August 2000 – A 19,900 gt Indian registered bulker ("Chettinad Glory") at anchor at Chennai, reported an attempted boarding via the anchor chain by four persons from a speedboat. The crew were alerted and the attempt was not successful.

#24 August 2000 – A 24,700 gt Cypriot registered bulk carrier ("Effy N") at the outer anchorage, Kandla, reported being boarded by five persons via forecastle from a small wooden boat. The boarders left the ship when the duty officer raised the alarm and mustered all crew on deck.

#15 September 2000 – A 4,100 gt Indian registered tanker (Vayudoot") at Chennai anchorage (Madras), reported being boarded by four persons from a small unlit boat. The forepeak store was broken into and ship’s stores stolen. The alarm was raised and the boarders jumped overboard.

#16 September 2000 – A 18,100 gt Norwegian tanker ("Champion Trader") reported being boarded by two armed persons while discharging at Kandla. The forward store was forced open and a bell and six saddles stolen before they were seen. They left the vessel in a waiting boat which contained three other persons.

#28 September 2000 – A 36,700 gt Philippine flag bulker ("Maersk Timonel") at Chennai anchorage (13.05N: 080.21E) reported being boarded by persons armed with knives. The alarm was raised and the boarders left the vessel.

#14 October 2000 – A 19,900 Indian registered bulker ("Chettinad Glory") at anchor off Madras reported an attempted boarding by four persons from a speedboat via the anchor chain. They were seen by the crew and the attempt was aborted.

#18 October 2000 – A 8,300 gt Panama flag tanker ("Oriental Peony") berthed at Kandla reported being boarded by persons who broke open the storeroom at the stern and stole a large quantity of ship's stores and equipment. Police later recovered one toolbox.

#18 October 2000 – A 77,200 gt Singapore flag bulker ("Kohju") at Chennai reported an attempted boarding at the stern by six persons from a speedboat. The crew on anti piracy watch foiled the attempted boarding.

#9 November 2000 – A 38,300 gt Singapore registered bulker ("Maersk Taikung") at Chennai outer anchorage, reported being boarded by six armed persons who tried to steal mooring ropes. The boarders were seen and the alarm was raised. Thee crew mustered on deck and the boarders left the vessel.

#11 November 2000 – A 37,900 gt Indian registered tanker ("Naik Jadunath Singh") at anchor off Kochi reported being boarded via the anchor chain by armed persons who stole ship’s stores before leaving in a small wooden craft.

#14 November 2000 – A vessel at 05.47N: 077:03E, off Cape Comorin, India, reported that four persons from a wooden boat boarded a barge which was being towed by a ship. They stole emergency towing wire and fled. They subsequently returned and tried to board the barge again an hour later.

#22 November 2000 – A Chinese registered tug ("HangTuo 2001") towing a barge off India at 08.49N: 076.13E, reported that persons from five speedboats boarded and stole spare parts. An hour later they reboarded but did not steal anything.

#10 December 2000 – A 30,500 gt Indian registered tanker ("Subedar Joginder Singh PVC") anchored off Cochin at 09.59N: 076.05E reported being boarded by persons armed with knives and crowbars who stole three mooring ropes before leaving in a 50 metre long boat.

#11 December 2000 – "Subedar Joginder Singh PVC", alongside at Cochin, reported being boarded a second time (see above) by six persons armed with knives, crowbars and other weapons, who cut and stole a forward mooring rope and escaped.

#21 December 2001 – A 16,900 gt Indian registered bulker ("Jag Vidya") at Chennai anchorage (13.04N:103.19E) reported that six persons armed with sticks boarded and stole 20 m of welding cable.

#24 December 2000 – A 77,100 gt Taiwanese flag bulker ("Cape Africa") at Chennai anchorage reported that persons boarded but they left when the duty officer spotted them and chased them away.

INDIAN OCEAN/ARABIAN SEA

#16 January 2000 – A 75,000 gt Kuwaiti flag tanker ("Hadiyah") reported being boarded while underway at 06.09N: 091.42E (south west of the Nicobar Islands). Ship’s stores and equipment were reported stolen.

#6 February 2000 – A vessel ("Pilin-21") was highjacked by armed persons while underway at 11.70N: 095.05E, east of the Andaman Islands. All 12 Thai crew were set adrift in a life raft, picked up by a Russian tanker and landed at Calcutta.

#7 May 2000 – A 5,800 gt Singapore flag container vessel ("X Press Makalu") on passage north east of the Andaman Islands at 14:12N: 093:45.4E, reported being followed and subsequently approached by an unidentified naval vessel. Despite being asked for identification via VHF Channel 16, the naval ship maintained radio silence before breaking contact.

#13 September 2000 – A 19,900 gt Maltese registered tanker ("WS Challenger") on passage in the Arabian Sea at 21.53N: 064.24E, reported an approach at full speed by six fast speed boats. The master raised the alarm and the crew mustered on deck deploying fire hoses and the deck lights switched on. The speed boats followed the tanker for 30 minutes before veering off.

#6 November 2000 – A 747 gt Bahamas registered tug ("Smit Sulawesi") underway in the Andaman Sea at 10.35N: 097.24E reported that an unlit boat followed the vessel for some time. The deck lights were switched on and the boat went away.

#14 November 2000 – A 223,700 gt Cyprus registered container vessel ("Mosel") on passage in the Indian Ocean at 11.04N: 062.44E reported being approached by a small boat which went away when the vessel altered course and took preventive measures.

INDONESIA

#4 January 2000 – A Singapore registered 17100 gt oil tanker ("Gemini) reported being boarded by seven persons armed with long knives while alongside at Muara Karang, Jakarta. Two crew members were held hostage while ship’s equipment was stolen.

#5 January 2000 – A 52,700 gt Bahamas flag oil tanker ("Naga") reported being boarded by six persons armed with long knives while at anchor at Lawi Lawi. Ship’s stores were reported stolen.

#6 January 2000 – An 18,000 gt Liberian registered container vessel ("Paris") reported being boarded by armed persons, unnoticed by a posted anti-piracy watch, at Tanjung Priok anchorage about three miles from the breakwater. Engine spares valued at US$13,000 were reported stolen.

#17 January 1999 – A 10,400 gt Cyprus flag bulker ("Ocean Ellie") at anchor off Kota Baru, Kalimantan, reported being boarded by ten persons armed with guns who tied up the AB on watch and held him at gun point while an inflatable life boat, mooring ropes and a hydraulic cutter were stolen from the forecastle store.

19 January 2000 – A bulk carrier reported being boarded while loading at Adang Bay. Ship’s stores were stolen.

#20 January 2000 – A 4,400 gt Vietnamese registered general cargo ship ("Tan Long") reported being boarded by persons armed with knives while at anchor off Tanjung Priok. Two crew members were held hostage while ship’s equipment was stolen.

#26 January 2000 – While alongside at Dumai, three persons armed with knives boarded a 4,500 gt Chinese general cargo vessel ("Ding An"). Entering the engine room they attacked and tied up the duty oiler before the alarm was raised and the boarders ran away without taking anything.

#28 January 2000 – While anchored off Belawan, three persons armed with knives were seen trying to board a 16,800 gt Cypriot bulk carrier ("Seaglory"). The alarm was sounded and the persons left the ship.

#31 January 2000 – A 38,300 gt Singapore flag bulk carrier ("Maritime Wisdom") at anchor in Adang Bay (01:42S:116:38.E) reported three attempted boardings by four persons. An alert crew foiled each attempt.

#9 February 2000 – A 7,700 gt Panama registered container vessel ("Artemis") at Belawan anchorage (03.53N: 098.47E) reported being boarded by persons armed with knives and sticks. When the alarm was sounded the boarders left the vessel.

#13 February 2000 – A 2000 gt Singapore registered chemical tanker ("Miyuki") anchored off Merak reported being boarded by three persons armed with knives. They gained access to the engine room and held the duty engineer at knifepoint while stealing engine stores before leaving the vessel in a sampan.

#13 February 2000 – A 36,500 gt Vanuatu registered bulker ("Eastern Power") reported being boarded by armed persons at 03.12N: 116.20E, the Pulau Laut coal terminal anchorage. The forecastle store was broken into and ship’s stores and equipment stolen.

#17 February 2000 – While at anchor off Tanjung Priok (03.07S: 106.54E) a 1655 gt Panama registered survey vessel ("Mariner") reported being boarded by nine persons armed with knives. Ship’s equipment was damaged and stores stolen.

#18 February 2000 – A 15,000 gt Cypriot bulk carrier ("Kurushima Sea") at Jakarta reported being boarded by persons armed with knives who threatened a crew member before stealing ship’s stores.

#19 February 2000 – A 6,900 Bahamas flag general cargo vessel ("Flora") at anchor off Samarinda (01.02S: 117.17E) reported being boarded by ten persons armed with knives. Holding one crew member hostage and threatening to kill him, the boarders stole ship’s stores and the crew member's personal effects.

#23 February 2000 – A 18,400 gt Panama flag general cargo vessel ("Changsha") in Jakarta outer anchorage area (06.02S:106.54E), 2.9 miles from the breakwater, reported being boarded by three persons armed with knives. An AB on deck watch aft was threatened but managed to inform the duty officer who raised the alarm. On hearing the alarm, the boarders left the vessel.

#24 February 2000 – A Panama registered 34,000 dwt bulker ("Amalfi") reported being approached by a small boat with seven persons on board while at anchor off Belawan. The boat was spotted by the watchman and the alarm raised. Despite that, an attempt was made to board via the anchor chain. The attempt was eventually called off but the boat and its occupants stayed around 100 m. off for around one hour before departing.

#1 March 2000 – A 16,000 dwt Thai general cargo vessel ("Thor Skipper") reported being attacked by around 20 persons while alongside at Surabaya. Rocks and petrol bombs were thrown at the vessel. Three mooring ropes were burnt and one crew member injured.

#2 March 2000 – A 55,000 gt Panama flag bulker ("Tina V") at Tanjung Priok Anchorage, reported two aborted attempts to board the vessel by persons using boat hooks from two motor launches. They fled when the duty watchman fired a shot in the air from vessel's rifle.

#5 March 2000 – A 24,100 gt Egyptian flag bulker ("Domiat") at Samarinda outer anchorage (00.60S: 117.17E) reported being boarded by persons armed with axes and iron bars. Four mooring ropes and a quantity of paint was stolen.

#22 March 2000 – A Panama registered 26,700 gt bulker ("Yong An 4") reported being boarded by armed persons while at the Pulau Laut coal terminal. The duty seaman was attacked and tied up. The duty officer raised the alarm and the boarders left the vessel in a small wooden boat after attempting to steal ship’s stores.

#27 March 2000 – A 29,700 gt Japanese bulker ("Sanko Sincere") at Surabaya reported being boarded by armed persons who stole ship’s stores.

#31 March 2000 – A 58,200 gt Liberian flag tanker ("Aegean Pride") reported being boarded while at anchor off Lawi-Lawi. Ship’s stores were stolen.

#1 April 2000 – A 20,100 gt Cypriot flag bulker ("Kyriakos M") reported being boarded by persons armed with long knives while at anchor off Belawan. They were seen by a watchman who raised the alarm and the boarders jumped over the side.

#2 April 2000 – A 30,200 gt Turkish registered bulker ("Hidir Selek") reported an attempted boarding by masked persons, prevented by the crew, while at anchor at Balikpapan (02.27S:117.00E).

#4 April 2000 – A vessel in Belawan anchorage reported being boarded by four persons. The alarm was raised and the boarders left the vessel without stealing anything.

#6 April 2000 – A 30,200 gt Turkish registered bulker ("Hidir Selek") reported being boarded at the stern by three persons armed with long knives while at anchor at Merak. The boarders tried to seize the duty watchman who jumped over the side, to be later rescued by the vessel’s crew. The alarm was raised and the boarders left the vessel.

#12 April 2000 – A 4100 gt Singapore registered bulker ("Falcon") reported an attempted boarding from a small boat while at anchor at Belawan. The crew were alerted and the attempt aborted.

#13 April 2000 – A 4,400 gt Panama registered tanker ("Amer Rhine") reported being approached by a boat while underway at 02.50S: 095.41E. The crew was mustered on deck and the boat veered off.

#15 April 2000 – A 6,600 gt Italian registered chemical tanker ("Mimmo Levoli") reported being boarded by seven persons armed with long knives while at anchor at Belawan. The alarm was raised and the boarders jumped over the side after stealing ship’s stores.

#17 April 2000 – A 15,900 gt Thai registered general cargo vessel ("Chainat Navee") reported being boarded by three persons armed with axes while at anchor at Belawan. The crew was alerted and the boarders jumped over the side.

#17 April 2000 – The "Mimmo Levoli" (see 14 April) was again boarded at Belawan anchorage, this time by three persons armed with long knives. Again the alarm was raised and the boarders jumped over the side.

#18 April 2000 – A 3,400 gt Hong Kong, China registered tanker ("Kelso") reported being boarded while alongside at Pusri Terminal, Palembang. One life raft was released into the water but later recovered by the crew and terminal personnel.

#19 April 2000 - A 29,950 gt Liberian flag bulk carrier ("Amber K") anchored off Sebuku Island, reported being boarded by three persons armed with long knives during heavy rain. The duty watchman sounded the alarm and the boarders jumped overboard, escaping with ship's stores and a liferaft.

#19 April 2000 – A 30,200 gt Turkish registered bulker ("Hidir Selek") reported being approached by a boat while underway off Pulau Laut Island at 04.22S:116.02E. The alarm was raised, the crew mustered on deck and the boat retreated.

#24 April 2000 - Six armed persons boarded an Indian flag 22,200 gt bulk carrier ("Jag Kanti") via the anchor chain at Bontang anchorage (00.03N: 117.42E). When a duty watchkeeper challenged them he was stabbed in the stomach, subsequently requiring hospitalization. Another seaman on duty alerted the duty officer who raised the alarm. Ship's stores, a fireman’s suit and breathing apparatus were stolen.

#24 April 2000 – A 55,900 gt Greek registered container vessel ("London") was boarded by armed persons from a fishing boat at Tanjung Priok anchorage. Ship’s stores were stolen.

#25 April 2000 – A 37,800 gt Panama registered bulker ("Rubin Power") reported being approached by a boat while at anchor at Tanjung Meranggas. Six persons were seen on the boat, one of whom was carrying a rope with a hook on the end. The crew were mustered on deck and no boarding attempt was made.

#29 April 2000 – A 14,500 gt Thai registered bulk carrier ("Vanda Naree") berthed at Cigading was boarded by around ten persons armed with long knives who broke open a door and entered into the engine room. The duty watchkeeper was tied up and threatened with a knife. Store rooms were broken into and ship’s stores stolen.

#4 May 2000 – While at anchor off Anyer a 4,500 gt Liberian flag LPG tanker (Phoenix Gas") reported persons trying to board the vessel from a small boat by throwing a hook attached to a rope. Hired guards on night duty on the vessel fired warning shots and the attempt stopped.

#5 May 2000 – A 22,500 gt Maltese registered bulk carrier ("Parita") at Belawan reported being boarded by five persons from an unlit boat. The duty officer was attacked with iron bars but was able to sound the alarm. The crew mustered on deck and the boarders jumped overboard.

#9 May 2000 – A 5,400 gt Cypriot registered container vessel (MCC Vantage"), alongside at the container terminal, Belawan, reported being boarded by three persons who threatened the duty watchman with knives. The crew was alerted and mustered and the boarders left the vessel.

#9 May 2000 – A 4,600 gt Malaysian registered tanker ("Nepline Delima"), underway at 02.05N: 109.13E reported being boarded by four persons armed with long knives. The third officer was taken hostage and crew valuables and cash stolen before the boarders left the vessel.

#10 May 2000 – A 16,700 gt Panama flag container vessel ("OOCL Acclaim") at anchor at Merak, reported that masked persons with rifles in a small boat approached the stern of the vessel. The alarm was raised and the boarding was not attempted.

#12 May 2000 – A 4,700 gt Vietnam registered general cargo vessel ("Tam Dao") at Belawan anchorage (03.54N:098:46E) reported being boarded by five persons armed with long knives who tied up the duty watchman and threatened to kill him. The forecastle store was broken into and a large amount of ship's stores stolen. The alarm was raised and the boarders jumped overboard. An hour later the same vessel was re-boarded but the crew had been alerted and the boarders left in a small unlit wooden boat.

#15 May 2000 – A vessel ("Erya 3") at 01.11N: 103.58E, just off the breakwater at Bata Ampar, reported being boarded by ten persons from several small boats. During the incident ship’s communications were reported to be jammed.

#17 May 2000 – A Malaysian registered 18,500 gt chemical tanker ("Bunga Cenderawasih") at Belawan anchorage (03.55N:098.46E) reported being boarded by five persons while heaving anchor. The alarm was sounded and the boarders jumped over the side taking ship’s stores.

#22 May 2000 – A 40,000 gt Cayman Island registered tanker ("Four Cutter") reported being boarded from the stern by four persons armed with long knives while alongside at Anyer. The crew was alerted and the boarders left the vessel.

#23 May 2000 – A 6,400 gt Singapore registered bulker ("Qing Ann"), at anchor at Samarinda, reported being boarded from the forecastle by two persons armed with long knives. The duty officer raised the alarm and the boarders jumped over the side.

#1 June 2000 - A 16,100 Cyprus registered bulker ("Haris") at 05.30S:105.17E, Panjang anchorage, reported an attempted boarding by six people armed with knives who hooked their boat onto the anchor chain. A watchman was threatened but the alarm was raised and the attempted boarding was prevented.

#5 June 2000 – A 6,700 gt Singapore flag tanker ("Steamers Areis") at Belawan anchorage reported being boarded via the anchor chain from a small wooded boat by two persons armed with long knives. The alarm was raised and the boarders jumped over the side.

#5 June 2000 – A 12,200 gt Maltese registered general cargo ship ("Pioneer Skipper") reported being boarded by four persons armed with knives while at anchor off Panjang, Sumatra. An on-duty oiler was attacked and his watch broken and engine spares were stolen.

#10 June 2000 – A container vessel ("SLS Pacer") at Tanjung Priok anchorage reported being boarded from the stern by eight persons armed with steel pipes. The alarm was raised and the boarders left the vessel.

#26 June 2000 – A 50,100 gt Singapore flag tanker ("Baroness") reported being boarded while at anchor at Tanjung Santan. The forecastle store was broken into during heavy rain and ship’s stores stolen.

#27 June 2000 – A 30,000 gt Turkish registered bulker ("Iman") at Tanjung Priok Eastern Anchorage, reported being boarded from the stern by five persons. They were seen by the duty AB on anti-piracy patrol who raised the alarm and the crew mustered at their station. The boarders jumped into the sea and escaped.

#4 July 2000 – A 13,700 gt Liberian registered bulker ("Dorothea Oldendorff") reported being boarded by three persons armed with long knives while alongside at Belawan. The boarders tried to enter the forecastle store but were seen by the crew who raised the alarm and the boarders left the vessel.

#7 July 2000 – A 4,400 gt Liberian registered container ship (Top Star") was boarded by five armed persons while on passage in the Durian Straits at 00.49N: 103.35E. The Second Officer’s cash and personal effects were stolen.

#10 July 2000 – A 4900 gt Panama registered general cargo vessel ("Tradenes"), at anchor off Samarinda, reported that four persons armed with knives boarded at the stern. Ship’s equipment was reported stolen.

#15 July 2000 – A 39,300 gt Liberian registered bulker ("Linda Oldendorff") at anchor at Cigading Roads reported being approached from the stern by a speed boat containing three persons who tried to board. it. The duty watchman spotted them and raised the alarm

#24 July 2000 – A 2800 gt Malaysian flag tanker ("Grace Frontier") underway off eastern Sumatra reported being boarded by ten persons armed with guns who held the crew hostage for nearly two days. Crew personal effects and cash were stolen when the boarders eventually left the vessel in a fishing boat.

#24 July 2000 – An Antigua & Barbuda registered 9,700 gt container vessel ("Malaysia Star 1"), berthed at Belawan container terminal, reported being boarded by two persons using a line with a hook attached. Ship’s stores were stolen.

#25 July 2000 – A 5,400 Cypriot flag container vessel ("MCC Vantage"), berthed at Belawan, reported being boarded by three persons while port officials were on board. Containers were opened and some of the contents thrown into the water.

#28 July 2000 – A 38,900 gt Panama flag bulker ("Maersk Senang") at Adang Bay anchorage (01.42S:116.39E) reported being boarded via the anchor chain by three persons who tried to break open the forecastle store. The alarm was raised and the persons left the vessel.

#2 August 2000 – A 2,500 gt Liberian registered container ship ("Pac Bintan") reported being boarded by six persons armed with long knives while underway in the Bangka Strait. The alarm was raised and the boarders left the vessel.

#6 August 2000 – A 16,300 gt Malaysian flag bulker ("Seri Ibonda") reported being boarded by five persons armed with knives while at Belawan. An AB was attacked and 25 drums of paint stolen. The thieves jumped overboard when the crew mustered on deck.

#8 August 2000 – The captain of a Taiwanese fishing boat ("Shuenn Man") was shot and killed when gunmen in a boat, said to look like an Indonesian naval vessel, opened fire on his vessel near the Ananbas islands, 220 miles north east of Singapore.

#13 August 2000 – A duty oiler on a 26,100 gt Panama registered bulk carrier ("Sea Wisdom") at Anyer anchorage (06.02S:105.54E) noticed three persons in the engine room workshop. He informed the bridge duty officer who raised the alarm. They left immediately, stealing some engine spares.

#14 August 2000 – A 5,400 gt Cypriot registered container vessel ("MCC Vantage") reported being boarded by four armed persons while berthed at Belawan. The forecastle store was broken into and breathing apparatus and 8 drums of paint stolen before the boarders were seen by a watchman.

#15 August 2000 – A 26,200 gt Panama registered bulker ("TK Gloria") reported being boarded by three armed persons while at anchor at Pulau Laut (03.12S:116.17E). A six person life raft and a pump was stolen before they were seen and the alarm raised.

#17 August 2000 – A 12,300 gt Singapore registered tanker ("Olympic"), berthed at Belawan, reported being boarded by five persons who, after attacking a crew member with a steel pipe and a knife, stole ship’s stores.

#18 August 2000 – A 16,700 gt Panama registered container ship ("OOCL Authority") reported being boarded by armed persons while at anchor off Tanjung Priok. The bosun’s store was broken into and ship’s stores stolen.

#18 August 2000 – "Gia Dinh", Vietnamese registered, reported being boarded by around 15 persons from a speed boat flying the Malaysian flag while en route for Indonesia.

#22 August 2000 – A 13,900 gt Hong Kong, China registered bulker ("Bolivar Light") reported being boarded by four armed persons at Samarinda anchorage. Eight other persons were seen in two speed boats. The welding of a hatch was broken but nothing taken.

#25 August 2000 – While underway off Situbondo (Java) at 02.11S:108.57E, Indonesia, two unlit speedboats doing about 27 knots approached a 28,000 gt Indian registered chemical tanker ("Sanmar Symphony") from the starboard quarter. At around 2 NM, the boats split up with one heading for the bow and the other for the stern. The ship switched on the deck lights and altered course. The boats turned away.

#30 August 2000 – A 34,000 gt Norwegian tanker ("Spirit") reported being boarded by 7/8 persons armed with long knives while anchored off Belawan (3.57N: 98.47E). A duty rating was tied up, threatened, and his personal effects stolen. An attempt was also made to break into the forecastle stores.

#31 August 2000 – A 2,500 gt Danish registered livestock carrier ("Adele") reported being boarded by five persons armed with long knives while at anchor off Panjang. The crew was mustered.

#1 September 2000 – A 22,900 gt Turkish flag vehicle carrier ("Hatime Ana") at Samarinda anchorage reported an attempted boarding by nine armed persons via the anchor chain. The alarm was raised and the attempt aborted.

#2 September 2000 – An 11,000 gt Cypriot flag bulker ("Oceanic Confidence") reported being boarded by six armed persons off Mapor at 00.58N:102.02E. Cash and property were stolen.

#8 September 2000 – A 37,500 gt Egyptian registered bulker ("Wadi Sudr") reported being boarded by four armed persons while at anchor off Tanjung Priok. The alarm was raised.

#9 September 2000 – A 2000 gt Singapore registered tanker ("Hai Soon VIII") reported being boarded by persons armed with long knives while underway in the Bangka Straits at 02.35S:105.46E. The duty officer and an AB were taken hostage while cash was stolen from the ship’s safe, and cash and personal belongings taken from the crew.

#15 September 2000 – A 62,300 gt Panama registered tanker ("Kent") at Lawi-Lawi anchorage, Balikpapan, reported an attempted boarding by nine persons from a motor boat. The crew saw them and the alarm was raised. The crew mustered on deck and the boarders left the vessel.

#21 September 2000 – A 3,500 gt Hong Kong, China registered tanker ("Kelso") reported being boarded by armed persons while at anchor at Bontang. They tried to open the forecastle store but when the alarm was raised they left the vessel via the anchor chain to a small boat with seven other people in it.

#21 September 2000 – A 16,400 gt Liberian registered bulker ("Henry Oldendorff") reported being boarded by armed persons at Tarahan wood pulp terminal, near Panjang. The entered the engine room via the emergency escape manifold and stole engine spares.

#23 September 2000 – A 3,600 gt, Bahamas registered LPG carrier ("Deauville") underway off Kalimantan, reported that a large craft amidst fishing boats in the vicinity approached from the port quarter. The craft switched on searchlights and ordered on VHF for the LPG to stop engines. The people in the craft said they were customs and wanted to board. When asked to identify, the craft replied 9YK. The LPG carrier did not stop. Eventually, the craft switched off its lights, turned around and moved in the opposite direction.

#24 September 2000 – A 25,600 gt, Maltese registered bulk carrier ("A.Hazer") at Samarinda, reported the theft of a life raft.

#25 September 2000 – A 2,400 gt Malaysian registered tanker ("Petchem") reported being boarded by about fifteen persons armed with knives while underway off Kepulauan Tambelan at 01.40N: 106.18E. The crew were locked up in a cabin and 2,500 tonnes of gas oil transshipped to another tanker.

#28 September 2000 – A 5,400 gt Singapore registered chemical tanker (Eastern Eureka") reported being approached by a small boat carrying four armed persons while underway off Pulau Seribu at 05.23S: 106.57E. The crew were alerted and after 40 minutes the other boat broke contact.

#28 September 2000 – A 22,400 gt Dutch registered chemical tanker ("Jo Sypress") reported being approached by a fast boat carrying around ten armed persons while underway off Selat Karimata at 00.03N:108.07E. The crew were alerted and no attempt was made to board.

#1 October 2000 – A 4,700 gt Panama registered tanker ("Acada Dolphin") reported being boarded from a small boat by four persons armed with knives while at anchor at Dumai. Although padlocks were broken nothing was reported stolen.

#5 October 2000 – A 9,000 gt Marshall Islands registered container ship ("Cape Canet") at Jakarta anchorage (06.04S:106.54E), reported being boarded by six persons armed with long knives. The duty watchmen raised the alarm but the boarders stole ship's stores and escaped.

#9 October 2000 – A 5,700 gt Chinese registered general cargo ship ("Lian Xiang") underway at 03.09N:105.30E, off Kepulauan Anambas, reported an attempted boarding by five persons from a speedboat. The duty officer noticed the boat and raised the alarm. The crew mustered on deck and the boat left.

#21 October 2000 – While at anchor at Bontang at 00.08N:117.35E, a 10,600 gt Panama registered bulker ("Jody F Millenium") reported that two persons armed with knives boarded and locked the seaman on duty inside the crane post and stole ship’s stores. The chief officer raised the alarm and the boarders left.

#29 October 2000 - A 127,600 gt Liberian registered tanker ("Flandre") at anchor at Teluk Semangka (05.33S: 104.38E) reported capturing a boarder who was handed over to the police.

#29 October 2000 – A 12,900 gt Panama registered bulker ("Bright Hope") at Samarinda anchorage (00.14S:117.35E) reported being boarded by seven persons armed with long knives. A life raft was stolen.

#30 October 2000 – A 5,500 gt Panama registered chemical tanker ("Botany Treasure") reported being approached by eight small boats while at anchor at Kuala Enok (00.31N: 103.24E). The alarm was raised and the crew mustered on deck. No attempt was made to board.

#30 October 2000 – A 35,900 gt Panama registered bulker ("Harmony") at Tarahan Anchorage at 05.31S: 105.19E, reported being boarded by persons who entered the engine room, broke into the storeroom by destroying locks and stole a large quantity of spare parts.

#3 November 2000 – A 28,100 gt Australian registered chemical tanker ("Simunye") on passage in Indonesian waters at 3.17S: 109.41E reported that a fast craft approached from the stern at night which followed the vessel for forty minutes before heading towards another ship in the area.

#4 November 2000 – A 27,700 gt Korean registered bulker ("Pretty Prosperity") reported being boarded by five armed persons while at anchor at Tanjung Priok. Ship’s stores and two life rafts were stolen.

#12 November 2000 – An 8,200 gt Panama registered chemical tanker ("NCC Najd") at Tanjung Priok anchorage, 06.02S: 106.54E, reported being boarded by five persons armed with long knives. Engine spares were stolen.

#13 November 2000 – A 52,700 gt Bahamas registered tanker ("Naga") alongside in Cilacap, Indonesia reported being boarded by three persons armed with knives. They were spotted by a watchman who raised the alarm. The boarders jumped overboard and escaped in a small motorboat.

#18 November 2000 – A 12,900 gt Singapore registered bulker ("Asean Victory") approaching the Panjang pilot station (05.29S: 105.17E), reported being boarded from a small boat via the forecastle by around eight persons. They entered the engine room, tied up the duty oiler, stole engine spares and escaped in their boat.

#23 November 2000 – A 9,600 gt St Vincent registered general cargo vessel ("Agios Fanourios") underway 3 miles off Pulau We, Sumatra at 05.44N: 095.17E, reported the approach of three speedboats with red and blue stripes. The ship raised the alarm and the crew mustered on deck. The boats came close to the ship's port and starboard bow but eventually veered off.

#30 November 2000 – A 18,800 gt Liberian registered chemical tanker ("Conquest Venture") at Panjang anchorage reported that three persons boarded the vessel from the poop deck. They were seen by the watch who raised alarm and mustered the crew. The boarders jumped over the side and escaped in a small boat.

#2 December 2000 – A 58,100 gt Panama registered tanker ("Silver Paradise") at anchor at Lawi Lawi, Balik Papan (01.28S:116.48E) reported being boarded by armed persons who stole a life raft and a life buoy.

#6 December 2001 – A Panama registered 18,100 gt vehicle carrier ("Trans Future 1") underway off Pengikik Besar (00.15N: 108.15E) reported an attempted boarding by eight armed persons from a speedboat. The master took evasive action to prevent boarding.

#7 December 2000 – A 54,000 gt Bahamas registered tanker (Kyushu Spirit") at anchor off Santan, East Kalimantan, reported being boarded by persons, via the anchor chain, who tried to steal stores. The alarm was raised and the boarders left the vessel.

18 December 2000 – A 50,100 gt Singapore flag tanker ("Baroness") at Cilacap reported being boarded by three persons armed with long knives who tied up the mechanic on duty in the engine room and left the vessel with engine spares.

#19 December 2000 – A 39,900 gt Panama registered bulker ("Global Fortune") at Kotabaru anchorage, north of Pulau Laut, reported a boarding by five persons armed with knives who stole a life raft from the forecastle deck.

#22 December 2000 – A 18,700 gt UK registered general cargo vessel ("Teignbank") reported being boarded by a large number of persons armed with knives while at anchor at Bitung. The boarders tried to saw through the paint locker padlock but the response from the 2 Duty A/B's and the 2nd Officer frustrated the attempt.


#22 December 2000 – A 6,100 gt Panama registered gas carrier ("Tarquin Crest") moored at Anyer (06.02S: 105.56E) reported being boarded from the stern by three persons armed with long knives. The boarders were seen and confronted by armed guards supplied from the shore. The boarders were captured and handed over to the local police for investigation. Two others, waiting in a boat below, escaped.

#24 December 2000 – A 5,500 gt Panama registered general cargo ship ("Brave Pescadores") at Cigading reported being boarded by seven persons armed with long knives who tied up the duty oiler in the engine room before stealing engine room stores.

25 December 2000 – A 1,200 gt Thai registered tanker ("Siam Veera") at anchor at Balikpapan reported that several persons in two small boats attempted to board. The alarm was raised and the attempt aborted.

IRAN

4 July 2000 – A 26,400 gt Kuwaiti flag tanker ("Al Badiyah") at anchor off Bandar Abbas reported being boarded by persons who stole ship’s stores.

KENYA

#21 January 2000 – A 7150 gt Panama flag chemical tanker (Equity") at Mombasa inner anchorage reported being boarded by persons from two canoes. Ship’s stores and equipment were reported stolen.

#2 September 2000 – A Georgian registered general cargo ship ("Victoria I") at Mombasa reported a boarding by persons armed with long knives. Mooring ropes were stolen.

#5 December 2000 – A 12,000 gt Cyprus registered container ship ("Nordsun") alongside at the container terminal, Mombasa, reported that a person armed with a long knife attacked an on board watchman. The duty officer went to help and found that some of the ship's equipment was damaged. The police were contacted and the boarder left.

#9 December 2000 – A 27,400 gt Liberian registered tanker ("Highseas") tied to a dolphin at the Atkipevu oil terminal, Mombasa, reported that a person cut and stole two forward mooring ropes leaving the tanker with unsafe moorings.

#24 December 2000 – A 2,000 gt Portuguese registered general cargo vessel ("Hirma") anchored off Kipevu oil terminal, Kenya (04.03S: 039.37E) reported that several persons armed with iron bars boarded from two canoes and stole ship's stores.

5 January 2000 – A 2,200 gt Singapore registered tanker ("Ocean Winner") underway in the Malacca Strait at 01.44N: 102.33 E reported being boarded by persons who stole ship’s equipment.

10 January 2000 – A 4,200 gt Malaysian registered container vessel ("Carnation") underway in the Malacca Strait at 01.43N: 102.36E reported an attempted boarding.

12 January 2000 – A 11,500 gt Liberian registered general cargo ship ("Aqi") underway in the Malacca Strait at 01.44N: 102.33E reported being boarded by persons who stole ship’s equipment and crew effects.

#12 January 2000 – A 35,600 gt Panama flag bulker ("Saturn II) reported being approached by a small boat with five persons armed with guns on board who attempted to board the vessel while underway in the Malacca Strait at 01.46N: 102.32E.

#16 January 2000 – A Panama registered 22,400 gt tanker ("Ibnu") reported being boarded undetected by four persons armed with knives and crowbars while underway at 01.45N: 102.35E. The Chief Officer was tied up and his cash and belongings stolen. Two ship’s radios were also taken.

#17 January 2000 – A 7,600 gt Panama registered general cargo vessel ("Bandung Ace") reported being boarded by five persons while underway at 01.41N: 102.39E off Sungai Pakning. Cash and personal belongings were stolen from the master.

#17 January 2000 – A 448 gt Omani flag tug ("Mussandam") reported an attempted boarding by persons from a speed boat while underway at 01.37N: 102.57E. Searchlights were directed at the speed boat which veered off.

17 January 2000 – A Malaysian registered general cargo ship ("Malayan Empress") underway in the Malacca Strait at 01.44N: 102.31E reported being boarded by persons who stole ship’s cash.

#20 January 2000 – While underway in the Malacca Strait at 04.37N: 098.43E, a 37,100 gt Greek registered container vessel ("Hanjin Bremen") reported being boarded by five persons armed with swords. The master was attacked a personal belongings and cash from the safe stolen.

#21 January 2000 – A 55,000 gt Liberian flag oil tanker ("Valiant") reported an attempted boarding by six persons from a dark coloured motor boat while at anchor in the Malacca Strait at 01.13N: 103.34E. The crew was alerted and stopped the boarding.

#31 January 2000 – A 18,300 gt Liberian flag chemical tanker ("Courage Venture") reported an attempted boarding when it was approached at night by a speed boat in the westbound traffic separation area at 01.13N: 103.30E. The approaching boat was illuminated by a light and the ship’s whistle sounded. The speed boat veered off.

4 February 2000 – A 38,900 gt Panama registered bulker ("Hang Ta") underway in the Malacca Strait reported an attempted boarding.

#23 February 2000 – A 3,700 gt Panama flag chemical tanker ("Global Mars"), carrying around 6,000 tons of palm oil, was attacked by around 20 pirates armed with automatic weapons while on passage from Port Kelang to Haldia (India) at 07.32N: 097.24E. The crew were held captive until 7 March when they were forced onto a small boat and abandoned. On 10 March they landed at Surin, near Phuket, from where they contacted the authorities. In May a vessel reported to be "Global Mars", now renamed Bulawan and registered in Honduras, was reported to have been detained in a southern China port. 2,500 tons of palm oil remained on board.

18 April 2000 – A Malaysian registered fishing boat ("SLFA 1207") at One Fathom Bank in the Malacca Strait reported being boarded by persons who stole cash.

#9 May 2000 – A 42,500 gt Singapore registered LPG carrier ("Pacific Harmony") underway in the Malacca Strait at 01.37N: 102.05E, reported being approached by two speed boats. The ship's crew activated water jets and any attempt to board the vessel was aborted.

#27 May 2000 – A 11,800 gt Singapore flag tanker ("Temasek") underway in the Malacca Straits at 01.60N: 102.13E reported being boarded by a group of six or seven armed persons. Cash and personal effects reported stolen from the master and chief engineer.

27 May 2000 – A 1,500 gt Malaysian registered general cargo ship ("Ribuan Jaya") underway in the Malacca Strait at 01.56N: 102.21E reported being boarded by persons who stole RM6,500 and crew personal effects.

#28 May 2000 – A 7,200 gt Panama registered chemical tanker ("Encounter") reported being boarded by five persons armed with long knives while underway in the Malacca Strait at 02.00N: 102.28E. They entered the accommodation area through the engine room skylight and tried to break into the master’s cabin. The master raised the alarm and the boarders left the vessel.

#29 May 2000 – A 135,500 gt Panama flag bulker ("Cosmo Jupiter"), underway at 01.47N: 102.28E, reported being approached by an unlit boat carrying 10 persons. The alarm was raised and the boat veered off.

#31 May 2000 – A 77,600 gt Panama flag bulker ("Clarita") underway in the Malacca Straits at 01:47N: 102:28E, reported being approached from the stern by a fast, unlit fast speed boat. The alarm was raised and the deck lights switched on and the speed boat veered off.

31 May 2000 – A 1,100 gt Malaysian registered general cargo vessel ("Builder") underway in the Malacca Strait at 01.53N: 102.25E reported an attempted boarding.

1 June 2000 – A 62,600 gt Bahamas registered tanker ("Koa Spirit"), underway in the Malacca Strait at 01.47N: 102.28E reported foiling an attempted boarding.

#1 June 2000 – While underway to Singapore in the Malacca Straits at 01:49N: 102:27E, a 4,900 gt Singapore registered tanker ("Changi") reported being boarded by seven persons armed with long knives. They entered the captain's cabin, tied him up and stole the ship's cash (US$ 1483), crew personal effects and ship's communication equipment. They left the vessel when the duty officer raised the alarm.

8 June 2000 – A 72,900 gt Liberian registered container ship ("Hellas"), underway in the Malacca Strait at 01.56N: 102.18E reported foiling an attempted boarding.

12 June 2000 – A 750 gt Honduras registered general cargo ship ("Chahaya Victory") underway in the Malacca Strait at 01.53N: 102.25E reported being boarded by persons who stole ship’s documents and cash.

#28 June 2000 – A 37,599 gt German registered container vessel ("Humen Bridge") reported being boarded by seven persons while on passage in the Malacca Strait between Singapore and Port Kelang at 02.08N: 102.32E. The chief officer was overpowered on the bridge and US$12,000 and crew personal effects stolen.

#20 July 2000 – A 3,500 gt Panama registered LPG carrier ("Gas Fortune") in the Malacca Straits at 01.50N:102.22E, reported being boarded by six persons armed with long knives. They tied up the crew and threatened to kill them if they did not co-operate. Around US$ 10,000 was stolen together with valuables from the crew.

#22 July 2000 – A 25,700 gt Liberian registered bulker ("Sanko Rose") westbound in the Malacca Straits reported being approached by six persons in a white speed boat with a silent engine, who tried to board using a bamboo hook. The crew was mustered on deck and the attack was aborted.

#28 July 2000 – A Singapore registered 10,900 gt container ship ("Achiever") on passage in the Malacca Strait at 01:45N: 102:32E reported being boarded by eight persons armed with knives. A crew member was held hostage as cash and personal belongings were stolen.

#31 July 2000 – A Hong Kong, China registered bulker ("Handy Logger") on passage in the Malacca Strait at 02:01N: 102:03E reported being approached by a boat which veered off when the ship’s searchlight was directed at it.

#3 August 2000 – While underway in the Malacca Strait at 00:11N: 103:38E, a 31,200 gt German registered container ship ("Contship Action") reported being approached by two speedboats. The alarm was raised, searchlights were shone on the approaching craft and they veered off.

#10 August 2000 – A 23,400 Turkish registered bulk carrier ("Ali Ekinci") on passage from Singapore to Europe was boarded by five persons armed with long knives at 01.54N: 102.21E. The master was attacked. Cash (US$ 1,250) and crew personal items were stolen.

#15 August 2000 – A tug ("Harmony 8") on passage in the Malacca Strait at 02.04N:102.15E reported being boarded by five persons armed with long knives. The crew were tied up and the Chief Officer injured while stores, cash and crew personal effects were stolen.

15 August 2000 – A Malaysian registered fishing boat ("JHF 49B") underway in the Malacca Strait off Tg. Laboh reported being boarded by persons who took the boat and cash.

15 August 2000 – A Malaysian registered fishing boat ("JHF 885B") underway in the Malacca Strait off Tg. Laboh reported being boarded by persons who took the boat and RM30,000 in cash.

#16 August 2000 – A 2,400 gt Panama registered tanker ("Belicia") reported being approached by four speed boats while underway in the Malacca Strait at 05.35N:097.38E. The alarm was raised and fire hoses deployed. The boats left the vicinity.

#24 August 2000 – A 4350 gt Malaysian registered ro ro vessel ("Antara Dua"), reported being boarded by eight persons armed with machetes while on passage in the Malacca Strait at 01.47N: 102.27E, shortly after leaving Port Kelang. The crew were tied up while cash (US$ 26,400), TV, mobile phone, watches, shoes and clothing were stolen. When the boarders left the vessel their boat headed towards Bengkalis Island (Indonesia).

#24 August 2000 – While underway in the Malacca Strait at 01.45N: 102.32E, a 13,300 gt Singapore registered tanker ("Asean Providence") reported being approached by a small boat. The tanker directed the search lights at the boat and no attempt was made to board. It is believed the same people who attacked the Ro Ro ship an hour earlier were involved in this attack.

26 August 2000 – A 9,900 gt Singapore registered general cargo ship reported being boarded by two persons while underway in the Malacca strait at 03.05N: 102.09E. The alarm was raised and the boarders left the vessel.

#26 August 2000 – A 45,900 gt Singapore registered container ship ("Kota Cahaya") on passage in the Malacca Strait at 02.03N: 102.09E, reported being approached by a fast boat with five persons. Two boarded the ship. The alarm was raised and crew members directed fire hoses into the boat. The boarders jumped overboard and escaped.

#28 August 2000 – While underway at 01.55N: 102.19E, Malacca straits, six persons armed with machetes and knives boarded a 16,100 gt Cyprus flag container ship ("Tiger Bridge") from the poop deck from a small boat. They handcuffed the duty officer and held his wife as hostage. The boarders made the duty officer phone the master and took him down to the master's cabin. When the master opened the door he was attacked with a machete. Ship's equipment (binoculars and a walkie-talkie) and US$23,000 was stolen from the ship's safe. The master was seriously injured. Jewellery was also taken.

#30 August 2000 – A 4,500gt Malaysian registered container ship ("Clarissa") reported being boarded by seven persons armed with long knives while on passage in the Malacca Strait at 01.42N: 102.36E. After entering the master’s cabin, ship’s cash (US$ 5,400) and crew personal belongings were stolen.

30 August 2000 – A 15,500 gt UAE registered general cargo ship underway in the Malacca Strait at 02.30N: 101.36E reported foiling an attempted boarding.

#2 September 2000 – A 15,600 gt Panama registered container ship ("Penang Glory") reported being boarded by six persons armed with machetes and knives at 01.04N: 104.54E. They entered the master’s cabin while he was asleep, tied him up and stole US$25,000, a watch and a torch.

15 September 2000 – A 18,100 gt Liberian registered tanker ("Stolt Boton") underway in the Malacca Strait at 01.46N: 102.29E reported foiling an attempted boarding.

#16 September 2000 - A 16,900 gt Malaysian registered bulk carrier ("Alam Aman") on passage at 01.05N: 104.54E reported being approached by two speedboats. The duty officer raised the alarm and altered course. The speedboats veered away.

#21 September 2000 – A 4250 gt Panama registered chemical tanker ("Andhika Adhiraksha") underway in the Malacca Straits at 02.00N: 102.11E, reported being boarded by five persons armed with long knives and shotguns. They entered the master's and other officers' cabins and robbed their personal belongings. They then forced the master to open ship's safe and stole all the cash. One deck cadet was injured in the incident.

#21 September 2000 – A 19,700 gt China registered general cargo ship ("Zi Yun Chan") reported an attempted boarding while the ship was underway in the Malacca Straits at 01.46N: 102.30E. The potential boarders escaped in a speed boat when spotted by the crew.

21 September 2000 – A 2,600 gt Malaysian registered general cargo ship ("Juta Jaya") underway in the Malacca Strait at 01.38N: 102.50E reported foiling an attempted boarding.

22 September 2000 – A 159,400 gt Panama registered tanker ("C Bright") underway in the Malacca Strait at 01.49N: 102.22E reported foiling an attempted boarding.

#22 September 2000 - A 132,200 gt Liberian registered tanker ("Stena Constellation") underway in the Malacca Straits (01.51N: 102.20E) reported being boarded by five persons armed with guns and long knives who took hostage two of the crew on watch. They tried to enter the accommodation but the doors were locked. They then tried to break the bridge door but were unable to gain access. An Indonesian crew negotiated with the pirates and got the two hostages released. A walkie-talkie and a fire extinguisher were stolen.

#25 September 2000 – A 14,500 gt Chinese registered container ship ("Xiang An") reported being boarded by six persons armed with long knives while underway off Mapor (01.17N: 104.57E). US$ 320 in cash was stolen from the crew and personal belongings were also stolen.

#25 September 2000 - The duty officer on a 15,600 gt Panama registered container ship ("Penang Glory"), underway off Indonesia (01.05N: 104.03E), noticed a target on the radar which turned out to be an unlit boat approaching from stern. The duty officer took evasive manoeuvres, sounded the general alarm and warned other ships in the vicinity on VHF. Ten minutes later the boat aborted the attempt and headed towards other ships in the vicinity.

#26 September 2000 – A 52,700 gt Bahamas registered tanker ("Naga") reported being approached off Mapor at 01.16N: 104.58E by a boat containing 10-15 armed persons. The crew were alerted and searchlights shone on the boat which veered off.

26 September 2000 – A 9,400 gt Cyprus registered container ship ("Xpress Resolve") underway in the Malacca Strait at 01.56N: 102.17E reported foiling an attempted boarding.

26 September 2000 – A 1,600 gt Malaysian registered tanker ("Damansara") underway in the Malacca Strait at 01.47N: 102.37E reported that a boat containing eight persons made a close approach but no attempt was made to board.

#28 September 2000 – A 10,800 gt Singapore registered container ship ("Achiever") reported being approached by a small boat while underway in the Malacca Strait at 01.55N: 102.13E. The alarm was raised and evasive measures successfully taken.

#1 October 2000 – A 7,500 gt Indonesian registered general cargo ship ("Sinar Kudus") reported that five armed persons attempted to board from a speed boat while the vessel was underway in the Malacca Strait at 01.55N: 102.22E. The alarm was raised and evasive measures were successfully taken.

#1 October 2000 – A 6,000 gt Singapore registered container ship ("Saipan Winner") reported that four persons armed with guns and long knives boarded the vessel while it was underway in the Malacca Strait at 01.57N: 102.15E. The second officer and the duty AB were held while US$6,380 and crew belongings were stolen.

#2 October 2000 – A 2,600 gt Malaysian registered container ship ("Jet Joanna") reported an attempted boarding while underway in the Malacca Strait at 02.22N: 101.41E. The vessel successfully took evasive action.

#6 October 2000 – A 85,400 gt Panama registered bulker ("Nord Kraft") underway in the Malacca Strait at 01:45N: 102:31E, reported being approached from the stern by a wooden speedboat about six meters in length with a light blue hull. The crew raised the alarm and flashed the aldis lamp. The boat retreated and disappeared.

#16 October 2000 – A 6,700 gt Singapore registered general cargo ship ("Kota Melati"), underway in the Malacca Strait at 05.46N: 096.28E. reported being approached by five speed boats which came within 30 m of the vessel. The alarm was raised and evasive actions successfully taken.

21 October 2000 – A 556 gt Belize registered fishing boat ("Samtung 001") at anchor between Singapore and Batam Island reported being boarded by eight persons, apparently Indonesians, who took four crew members hostage. Ransom money was demanded.

#25 October 2000 – A 16,100 gt Dutch registered vessel ("Nile River") ship at anchor in the Malacca Strait at 00.45N: 103.42E, reported being boarded by around 60-80 persons. The ship's crew fought with the boarders who eventually left the ship. Two crewmembers were slightly injured. The ship cut off the anchor chain and proceeded to Singapore.

26 October 2000 – While underway in the Malacca Strait at 01.27N:103.10E, a 1,200 gt Malaysian registered general cargo ship ("Senari Jaya") reported an attempted boarding by persons from a speed boat. The crew reacted and the attempt was aborted.

#26 October 2000 – While underway in the Malacca Strait at 01.27N: 103.11E, a 2,600 gt Malaysian registered container ship ("Jet Joanna") reported an attempted boarding by persons from a speed boat. The crew reacted and the attempt was aborted.

#3 November 2000 – A 67,500 gt Hong Kong, China registered container vessel ("OOCL San Francisco") on passage in the Malacca Strait at 04.04N: 099.25E reported being approached at the bow by a boat. The crew were alerted and no attempt at boarding was made.

#5 November 2000 – A 1,200 gt Danish registered general cargo vessel ("Thor Kirsten"), southbound to Australia, reported being boarded while underway about 20 nm south east of Singapore by persons from a 10 m long red speedboat. The boarders were seen by the duty officer who sounded the alarm and fired a shotgun into the air. The boarders left the vessel immediately.

#5 November 2000 - A 1,700 gt Panama registered general cargo vessel ("Glory Selatan VIII") on passage in the Malacca Strait at 01.49N: 102.23E reported being boarded by nine persons armed with guns and knives. Crew cash and personal belongings were stolen before the boarders left on a high speed boat with two engines.

#6 November 2000 – A 15,500 gt Maltese registered bulker ("Fortuna Australia") on passage in the Malacca Strait at 01.56N: 102.19E reported being boarded by between 10-20 armed persons who took the crew hostage while cash and valuables were stolen.

#9 November 2000 – A 5,900 gt Bangladesh registered container ship ("Bangla Muni") on passage in the Malacca Strait at 01.46N: 102.27E, reported being boarded by around 15 persons from two speedboats. The master was injured and five crew taken hostage as cash, documents, ship's property and crew's valuables were stolen.

#16 November 2000 – A 9,600 gt Bangladesh registered multi-purpose vessel ("Jaami") in the Malacca Strait at 01.06N: 102.09E, reported an attempted boarding by several persons from four fishing boats which approached the vessel. The crew was alerted and the attempt aborted.

#18 November 2000 – A 137,700 gt Panama registered tanker ("Lania") in the Singapore Strait at 01.16N: 104.07E reported that a small unlit boat was seen alongside. Lights were flashed at the boat and no attempt was made to board.

#20 November 2000 – A 5,200 gt Panama registered tanker ("Julia 1") underway in the Malacca Strait at 01.44N: 102.32E, reported being boarded by around twenty persons who took the master, chief engineer and radio officer hostage. They ransacked the accommodation and stole US$7,000 and personal effects from crew. They left in a speedboat after 40 minutes and headed towards the Indonesian coast.

#30 November 2000 – A 13,600 gt Singapore registered tanker ("Eternal Oil II") on passage in the Malacca Strait at 01.42N: 102.34E, reported that persons armed with long knives boarded. Ship's stores and US$500 cash from the crew were stolen before the boarders escaped in a small boat.

8 December 2000 – A 5,200 gt Panama registered tanker ("Julia 1") underway in the Malacca Strait at 01.54N: 102.22E reported being approached by a speedboat containing persons apparently intent on boarding. The crew were alerted and the attempt foiled.

#10 December 2000 – A 32,700 gt Bahamas registered tanker ("Columbus") at anchor in the Malacca Strait at 01.07N: 103.29E reported being boarded by five persons who tried to steal a mooring rope. The crew reacted and the attempt was foiled.

#12 December 2000 – A 700 gt Belize registered tanker ("Western Targa VIII") underway in the Singapore Strait at 01.15N: 104.07E reported being boarded by twelve persons armed with guns and knives who took control of the ship for three hours. The crew were threatened and locked up while crew belongings and ship’s stores were stolen. The boarders eventually left the vessel at 01.15N; 104.05E.

#13 December 2000 – A 17,900 gt Panama registered container ship ("Uni-Prudent") underway in the Malacca Strait at 01.58N: 102.14E reported being boarded by four persons armed with long knives. The crew was alerted and the boarders left the vessel.

#14 December 2000 – A 5,900 gt Bangladesh registered container vessel ("Banga Bonik") underway in the Malacca Strait at 01.46N: 102.28E, reported an attempted boarding by persons from a speedboat. The attempt was abandoned when the crew directed a searchlight at the boat.

#20 December 2000 – A Kuwaiti registered 158,500 gt VLCC ("Al Salheia"), on southbound passage in the Malacca Strait at 01.16N: 109.13E was approached by a small unlit craft, not visible on radar, carrying four people until it was 10 metres astern. The crew illuminated the craft which left the vicinity in a west north west direction.

#21 December 2000 – A 130,000 gt French registered tanker ("Once") on passage in the Malacca Strait at 01.52N: 102.18E reported a close approach by a speedboat.

#20 December 2000 – A 10,100 gt Bahamas registered general cargo vessel underway off Indonesia at 01.15N: 103.19E, reported a close approach by a small unlit craft with four persons. The crew directed searchlights and the craft retreated.

#24 December 2000 – A 5,100 gt Malaysian registered container ship ("Gihuat") on passage in the Malacca Strait at 01.18N: 103.21E reported being boarded by three persons armed with long knives. The alarm was raised and the boarders left the vessel.

#24 December 2000 – A 1,600 gt Danish registered general cargo ship ("Arktis Ocean") on passage in the Malacca Strait at 01.15N: 103.20E reported being boarded by ten persons from a black painted boat. The alarm was raised and the boarders left the vessel.

#29 December 2000 – A 31,300 gt Singapore registered container ship ("APL Diamond") on passage in the Malacca Strait at 01.18N: 103.22E prevented a boarding by persons who approached from starboard in a small boat.

#29 December 2000 – A 33,000 gt Cambodian flag bulker ("Galaxy") underway in the Singapore Strait at 01.19N: 104.16E reported that an alert watch twice, within two hours, prevented a boarding from persons in a small boat.

#30 December 2000 – A 6,400 gt Malaysian flag tanker ("Bunga Melawis Satu") on passage in the Malacca Strait at 01.19N: 103.18E reported being boarded by four persons armed with knives who gained access to the bridge and stole cash from the 3rd officer. When the alarm was raised the boarders jumped overboard and escaped.

31 December 2000 – A vessel in the Malacca Straits reported that it had been boarded by persons armed with knives and machetes.

MALAYSIA

#26 March 2000 – A 3,000 gt Singapore flag general cargo vessel ("Asean Energy") at anchor off Bintulu reported being boarded via the hawse pipe by three persons armed with long knives. They broke in to the forecastle paint room and stole ship's stores. When noticed by crew, they jumped overboard and escaped in a high speed boat.

#13 April 2000 – A 4,800 gt Singapore registered log carrier ("Sukaria") reported being boarded while at anchor off Bintulu. The boarders were seen by the crew who raised the alarm. The boarders left the vessel.

#14 April 2000 – "Sukaria" (see above) was again boarded at Bintulu anchorage. The forecastle store was broken into but the alarm was raised and the boarders left the vessel without stealing anything.

#29 April 2000 – A 14,500 gt Cypriot registered bulker ("Mana") reported being boarded by six persons while alongside at Sandakan. The forecastle store was broken into but they were seen, the alarm raised and they left the vessel without stealing anything.

3 May 2000 – A fishing vessel at Pulau Boheian reported being robbed. The marine police were alerted and three suspects detained.

6 May 2000 – A fishing vessel ("TFA 522") at Pulau Lima Trengganu reported being robbed of both catch and cash.

#7 May 2000 – While on passage to Sandakan at 07.12N: 118.12E the duty officer on a 22,500 Greek flag bulk carrier ("Seabee") reported the approach of a suspicious craft from starboard side while another unlit wooden boat came alongside from port side. Persons in the boat attempted to board using a hook attached to a rope. The alarm was raised and the ship's siren sounded at which point the two boats left.

9 May 2000 - A tanker off Sarawak at 02.05N: 109.13E reported being boarded by four persons armed with long knives. The third officer was held hostage as crew valuables and cash were stolen.

#15 May 2000 – A 2,500 gt Malaysian registered tanker ("Meridian Star") underway off Sabah at 05.50N: 115.37E reported being approached by five masked persons in two wooden speed boats. The crew was alerted and took anti-piracy measures, sounding the alarm and using water hoses. The boats veered off towards Pulau Tiga.

#2 July 2000 – A 35,600 gt Qatar registered container vessel (("Kota Selamat") at anchor at Penang container terminal reported being boarded by two persons. They were seen by the duty seaman and the alarm raised, whereupon the boarders left the vessel.

#18 July 2000 – A 12,700 gt Turkish registered bulker ("Erkan Mete") reported being boarded while alongside at pier 4, Sandakan. The paint store was broken into and ship’s stores stolen.

#24 July 2000 – An 11,300 gt Ethiopian registered general cargo ship ("Abyot") at anchor off Tanjung Manis, Sibu, reported one operson trying to board via the anchor chain. The alarm was raised and the attempt aborted.

#27 August 2000 – The duty AB on a 17,200 gt Panama registered container vessel ("Recife") at Penang (05.25N: 100.21E) saw three men on the forecastle. The duty officer raised the alarm and the crew mustered at their stations. The boarders jumped into the water and escaped in two small wooden boats. Some container seals had been interfered with.

#28 August 2000 - A 14,400 gt Cambodian registered general cargo ship ("Zarina III") at anchor at Sandakan reported being boarded by persons who stole ship's stores and equipment.

#1 September 2000 – A 5,400 gt Cypriot registered container ship ("MCC Vantage") reported being approached by a small boat carrying four armed at Penang. The duty officer directed the ship’s Aldis lamp at the boat and raised the alarm. No attempt was made to board.

#11 September 2000 – A 21,000 gt Bahamas flag bulker ("Aspidoforos") reported being boarded by five persons armed with guns and long knives while at anchor at Bintulu, Sarawak. The forecastle stores were opened and ship’s stores stolen.

#24 September 2000 – A 22,500 gt Cypriot registered bulk carrier ("Storm Wind"), loading cargo at Sandakan, reported being boarded by two persons armed with long knives. They were seen trying to open the paint locker while twelve other persons waited in two boats tied to the anchor chain. The duty officer fired rocket flares at them and the attempt was thwarted. A second attempt to board was also foiled due to crew alertness.

#5 October 2000 – While at anchor off Sandakan at 05.49N: 118.07E, a 1,200 gt Indonesian tanker ("Allwell Perfect") reported being boarded by four persons armed with knives. An AB was threatened and the lock to the paint store broken before the he duty officer raised the alarm and the boarders fled.

#18 October 2000 – A 6,800 gt Panama flag tanker ("Global Eos") at Sandakan, reported being boarded by persons who attempted to steal ship's stores. The crew repelled the attack.

#3 November 2000 – A 20,800 Cyprus registered bulker ("Sea Muse") at anchor at Sandakan reported being boarded by one armed person while seven others were seen in a small boat alongside. The alarm was raised and the boarder left the vessel.

#11 December 2000 – A 4,900 gt Panama registered multi purpose vessel ("Tradenes") anchored off Tanjong Manis, Sarawak and loading cargo reported being boarded by six persons armed with knives who broke into the paint locker. The alarm was raised and the crew mustered on deck. The intruders jumped overboard and fled taking 1000 litres of paint.

#21 December 2000 – A 3,500 gt Singapore registered tanker ("Atalanta") at Sandakan anchorage reported being boarded by two armed persons who stole 20 large tins of paint before being seen.

31 December 2000 – Two vessels ("South Pacific" and "Pacific1)) anchored off Tanjung Piai, Johor state, reported that the crew had been held hostage by around 20 persons armed with pistols. Several thousand Singapore dollars were stolen. The local Marine Police Commander stated that initial investigations suggested the perpetrators may have originated from Batam Island (Indonesia). The thieves were said to appear to have had some military training.

MAURETANIA

#15 July 2000 – A 2,600 gt Spanish registered container vessel ("Hermanos Pinzon") at anchor in Nouadhibou bay, reported being boarded by persons from small speed boats who stole ship’s stores and equipment. The alarm was raised and the crew mustered on deck. The boarders then left in their boats.

MOZAMBIQUE

#8 May 2000 – A 22,500 gt Greek flag bulker ("Pacific Ocean") at anchor at Nacala, reported being boarded by persons armed with knives. A deck watchman was threatened and ship’s stores stolen.

#25 November 2000 – The duty watch on a 16,900 gt Cyprus flag bulker ("Pontoporos") discharging at Nacala, Mozambique, caught a stevedore armed with a knife lowering a mooring rope into the sea. He was handed over to the police.

MYANMAR

#29 July 2000 – A 7,800 gt Panama registered general cargo vessel ("Chu Hong"), on passage off Myanmar at 20.13N: 092.22E, en route from Singapore to Bangladesh, reported being chased for two hours and fired at by persons in a boat.

#1 October 2000 – A 6,800 gt Singapore registered general cargo ship ("Kota Mawar") at the explosives anchorage at Yangon reported that three armed persons tried to board the vessel. The alarm was raised and the attempt aborted.

31 October 2000 – A 2,400 gt Panama registered tanker ("Belicia") underway off Myanmar at 14.20N: 094.05E reported being told to stop by a small "warship". The master refused to stop and increased speed to leave the area.

NIGERIA

15 January 2000 – An offshore oil supply vessel was boarded by persons carrying rifles, six miles off Funiwa. Personal belongings were stolen from the crew and a life raft, radio equipment, computer and food taken from the ship.

17 January 2000 – An oil company barge was highjacked near Port Harcourt.

18 January 2000 – Two oil company tugs and nine crew were reported highjacked in Bayelesa State.

#19 January 2000 – A 1,032 gt Bahamas registered supply vessel ("Smit-Lloyd 31") reported being boarded by armed persons near Olibri. Three crew members were reported injured.

20 January 2000 – An oil company hovercraft was reported to have been highjacked with its five man crew near Port Harcourt.

#22 January 2000 – A 1070gt tug ("Seabulk Lincoln") was fired on from persons in a boat six miles off Funiwa. A portable diesel tank was hit.

26 January 2000 – An 1089 gt anchor handling tug/supply vessel ("Smit-Lloyd 31) was boarded by persons near Olibiri. Three of the crew were attacked suffering cuts and bruises.

#26 January 2000 – The 1330 gt supply vessel "Red Martin 1", St Vincent registered, was boarded by seven persons armed with machine guns at 04.03N: 005.56E offshore in the Gulf of Guinea. The master and second engineer were injured as vessel’s equipment and crew personal effects were stolen.

#30 January 2000 – During passage on the Escravos River, a 22,800 gt Dutch Antilles heavy lift vessel ("Swift") reported being approached by a speed boat carrying men in military uniform, who ordered the vessel to stop. The master refused and the attackers fired at the vessel with rifles for around 10 minutes.

#11 February 2000 – A 9,100 gt Bahamas flag tanker ("Dubai Pride") at Lagos anchorage (06.18N: 003.22E) reported being boarded by 10 persons armed with knives who stole mooring ropes and a quantity of stores.

#12 July 2000 – A 2000 gt Panama registered reefer ("Medemsand") reported being boarded by three uniformed men at Lagos who, after threatening the master with knives, stole US$10,000. The men left the vessel, got into a car and drove off.

#14 September 2000 – A 17,600 Cyprus registered bulker ("Lassia") anchored in Lagos Roads reported being boarded by three armed persons who stole three mooring ropes and safety equipment.

6 November 2000 – A vessel at anchot off Lagos reported being boarded by four persons armed with knives who threatened to kill the watchman as they stole ship’s property.

19 December 2000 – A 10.100 gt Bahamas registered general cargo ship ("Gur Master") at Lagos anchorage, reported a boarding by persons armed with knives. The ship weighed anchor and proceeded to open sea with two of the persons still on board. After threatening to kill the master when arrived in port they jumped overboard. After checks it was discovered that some of the ship's safety equipment was stolen. The ship informed the port control but received no response.

PANAMA

#27 September 2000 – a 25,000 GT Bahamas registered container ship ("Queensland Star") at anchor at Cristobal reported being approached by an inflatable carrying three armed persons. The alarm was raised and no boarding was attempted.

PERU

#24 April 2000 – A Bahamas registered vessel ("Ocelot Max") reported being boarded while awaiting bunkers at Callao anchorage. The forecastle store was broken into.

#1 May 2000 – A 15,000 gt Liberian registered chemical tanker ("Richmond Park") reported being boarded while alongside at Pisco. A mooring rope and towing equipment were stolen.

#14 July 2000 – A 16,800 gt German container vessel ("Wehr Ottensen") at Callao anchorage reported being boarded by a number of persons armed with knives. The forecastle store was broken into and a mooring rope stolen.

#4 September 2000 – A 22,100 gt Cyprus flag tanker ("Pella") discharging at Callao, reported being boarded by two persons armed with guns and a knife who stole mooring ropes, life buoys and fire hoses before leaving in a fishing vessel.

PHILIPPINES

20 February 1999 – A cargo vessel alongside at the Isabela Pier, Basilan, was fired upon from the dock.

#25 February 2000 – Over 40 people were reported killed when a bomb exploded on a bus on Kolambugan/Olamis City ferry, "Our Lady of Mediatrix".

#5 April 2000 – A 38,900 gt Panama registered bulker ("United Support") reported being approached by a boat while underway at 16.20N: 133 43E. The bulker altered course to prevent a boarding.

26 May 2000 – A bomb exploded on a ferry ("Supercat 5") between Dapitan and Cebu.

26 June 2000 – A tanker discharging at a fuel depot at Parang, Mandanao, reported that its oil line was cut, possibly by rebels seeking to extort money from the facility, resulting in a spill of around 18,000 litres into Illana Bay.

#25 September 2000 – A 17,000 gt Panama registered container ship ("Malaysia Bridge") at Manila Bay anchorage reported being boarded by five armed persons. The duty A/B noticed them and sounded the general alarm. The boarders jumped overboard taking with them some ship's equipment.

#29 September 2000 – A 5,100 gt Dutch registered reefer ("Majestic") reported being approached by a small unlit boat while underway off the Philippine coast at 08.02N: 127.18E, some 50 nm off Mindanao. Evasive manoeuvres prevented a boarding.

#9 October 2000 – A 15,000 gt Singapore registered container ship ("Kota Berkat") at Manila anchorage (14:36N: 120:53E) reported being boarded by eight persons who broke open forward store and stole 13 drums of paint. Crew noticed them and sounded alarm and the boarders fled.

#11 October 2000 – A Panama registered 6,500 gt reefer ("Fuji Mountain") at Davao anchorage, Mindanao, reported that armed persons threw hand grenades at the ship causing some damage to the hull.

#25 October 2000 – A Panama registered 19,900 gt bulker ("Aries Forest") at Davao anchorage, Mindanao, reported that armed persons in a motorized canoe threw explosives at the ship causing some damage.

#5 November 2000 – A vessel ("Almoria") at Davao anchorage, Mindanao, reported being attacked by rocket propelled grenades by persons in a motorized canoe.

#5 November 2000 – A Philippine registered 239 gt general cargo vessel ("James") at Davao anchorage, Mindanao, reported being attacked by rocket propelled grenades by persons in a motorized canoe.

RED SEA/GULF OF ADEN

#12 March 2000 – A 49,800 gt Greek oil tanker ("World Kudos") on passage from Yanbu to Singapore, 40 NM north east of Socotra at 12.57N: 055.00E reported an attempted boarding from a craft 25 m. long, 7 m. beam, painted brown with wooden decks and a large number of antennae. Evasive manoeuvring, increase in speed and use of hoses with full water pressure foiled the attack.

#13 July 2000 – A 27,000 gt Panama registered bulker ("Bonzita") on passage in the southern Red Sea at 15.39N: 041.26E, reported an attempted boarding by five persons from two speed boats. The crew was mustered and turned on hoses. The boats moved away.

#15 July 2000 – A 9,200 gt Barbados registered RoRo ("Bold Endurance") on passage in the southern Red Sea at 13.38N: 042.56E, reported being approached from the bow by two small fast unlit boats doing over 23 knots. When the ship's searchlight was directed toward the boats they retreated.  

#24 July 2000 – A 10,000 gt Panama registered bulker ("Dias") on passage in the southern Red Sea 8.5 NM off the Eritrean coast at 13.06N: 043.05E, reported being approached from the stern by three small boats at the northern end of the traffic lane. The boats, 5 to 8 meters in length had a speed of about 12 knots. The boats turned away after the alert crew directed searchlights at them.

#29 July 2000 – A 85,600 gt Liberian registered bulker ("Saraji Trader") on passage in the southern Red Sea at 13.11N: 043.01E reported being approached by four unlit boats. When the ship directed searchlights at the boats they retreated.

#1 August 2000 – A 50,200 gt Maltese registered tanker ("Arrow") on passage in the southern Red Sea at 13.44N: 042.57E reported being approached by a number of speed boats. One boat with six persons tried to block the ship's passage. The vessel took evasive manoeuvres and prevented the attempted attack.

#11 August 2000 – A 38,200 gt Panama registered bulk carrier ("Oceanic Enterprise") on passage in the Straits of Bab el Mandeb (12.13N: 042.29E) in the Southern Red Sea reported that four persons in a small fast boat tried to block the vessel. The boat followed the ship with an apparent intention to board. The duty officer alerted the crew who mustered on deck. The boat retreated and headed towards the north traffic lane.

11 August 2000 – An Australian yacht ("Dreamtime") underway in the southern red Sea at 13.01N: 043.13E reported being approached by three vessels with an apparent intention to attack. A distress message was picked up by a passing vessel and a French warship from Djibouti was sent to assist.

#1 September 2000 – A 26,800 gt Danish registered bulk carrier ("Stellar Light") underway off the coast of Somalia at 12.36N: 046.23E reported being approached by two high speed launches. The alarm was raised and lights shone on the approaching craft which veered off.

#7 October 2000 – A 3,900 gt Cypriot registered tanker ("Robela") on passage in the Red Sea at 14.26N: 042.11E reported an attempted boarding by around 40 persons from five boats. A passing vessel came to assist and the attempted boarding was aborted.

#12 October 2000 – A 6,200 gt Maltese registered general cargo ship ("Sun King") on passage in the southern Red Sea at 14.08N: 042.47E detected two high-speed unlit boats approaching on radar. When the ship fired three rockets, the boats retreated.

#12 October 2000 – A 11,800 gt Panama registered tanker ("Crystal") on passage in the Red Sea at 12.36N: 043.19E, reported an attempted boarding from five high-speed boats, each with 6 or 7 persons in each boat. The duty officer raised the alarm, the crew was mustered on deck and fire hoses were activated. The boats left.

#23 October 2000 – A 15,500 gt Saudi registered general cargo ship ("Ibn al Moataz") on passage 17nm off Ras Fatuna (Eritrea) in the southern Red Sea at 13.20N: 042.58E, reported an attempted boarding by four persons in a speedboat. The boat had blue stripes on the hull and was doing about 25 knots. The persons were armed with swords and other weapons. The ship took evasive action, sounded its whistle, mustered the crew and activated fire hoses. On seeing the crew alertness, the boat retreated.

#25 October 2000 – A 21,000 gt Indian flag chemical tanker ("Sabarimala") on passage at the northern end of Bab El Mandeb at 12.43N: 043.17E, reported being surrounded by several speedboats. Men from two of the boats attempted to board. The ship's crew mustered and activated fire hoses. On seeing crew alertness, the boats retreated.

#26 November 2000 – A French yacht ("Le Lady Lauren") on passage in the southern Red Sea at 12.17N: 044.52E reported that seven persons in three speedboats made two attempts to board. The yacht took evasive action and the boarding was averted.

3 December 2000 - A general cargo ship on passage in the Gulf of Aden at 12.31N: 045.00E, reported that five small high-speed crafts each with two persons made an approach. The crew were mustered and the boats eventually left in the direction of Aden.

#10 December 2000 – A 6,400 Liberian flag reefer ("Cape Cavo") underway in the Gulf of Aden at 12.17N: 045.04E reported being approached by two small high speed boats each with two men in military uniform. The alarm was raised and the crew mustered on deck. On seeing the crew the boats retreated.

11 December 2000 - .A general cargo vessel underway in the Gulf of Aden at 12.51N: 046.02E reported a close approach by a speed boat containing three persons. The ship took evasive action and the speedboat departed.

SINGAPORE

#1 October 2000 – A bulk carrier ("Hazel 1") at anchor 20km off Singapore at 01.13N: 103.34E reported being boarded by 21 persons armed with guns and knives. The crew were tied up and US$10,000 cash and personal belongings stolen. The master was ordered to start the ship but the engines had been dismantled for repairs.

18 November 2000 – A 137,700 gt Panama registered tanker ("Lania") near Singapore at 01.16N: 104.07E, reported being approached by a small unlit craft. The Aldis lamp was switched on and no boarding was attempted.

SOLOMON ISLANDS

#13 February 2000 – The "Capitaine Fearn", a 3100 gt Vanuatu registered general cargo vessel, reported being boarded by armed persons while anchored in Honiara Roads at 09.25S: 159.58E. One container was opened and two vehicles on deck broken into. Crew personal effects, ship’s equipment and cargo were stolen.

#26 July 2000 – A Japanese fishing vessel ("Solotai No 68") was hijacked off the Solomon Islands and the master was ordered to go to Guadalcanal. On the vessel's arrival in Honiara, police took the hijackers into custody.

SOMALIA

#27 January 2000 – About midway between the northern coast of Somalia and Yemen, in the Gulf of Aden at 13.03N: 048.41E, an Australian yacht ("Gone Troppo") was fired on by automatic weapons and subsequently boarded by five persons. The wife of the skipper of the yacht was wounded as cash and radio equipment were stolen.

#19 April 2000 – A French warship off Somalia at 07.04N: 049.58E reported being approached by two fast patrol boats. The boats soon left the area, apparently when they realised the nature of the vessel being approached.

#7 May 2000 – A yacht ("Jasali"), registered in Antigua & Barbuda, reported being fired upon from a fishing boat at 13.07N: 048.37E, off the Somali coast. The yacht took evasive action and prevented the fishing boat from coming alongside.

#8 July 2000 – A French vessel ("Net Express"), moored off the north Somali coast after an engine failure, was boarded by around 20 armed men and the crew taken hostage for several days at the coastal village of Bargaal. Radio equipment, generators, food, fuel and crew personal belongings were stolen before the boarders left in speed boats. The boarders were apprehended by Bargaal police the next day.

#16 November 2000 – A 8,00 gt Iran registered general cargo vessel ("Eco Elham") on passage 80 miles off the Somali coast at 04.21N: 049.49E, reported being chased for two hours by an apparent supply boat/fishing trawler. The ship took evasive action until the chase was aborted. The suspicious boat had white accommodation and grey hull.

#11 December 2000 - A 5,100 gt St Vincent registered general cargo ship ("Polymok") underway off Somalia at 12.51N: 046.02E reported being approached by a speed boat carrying three people. Evasive action was taken and no boarding attempted.

SOUTH AFRICA

#3 September 2000 - A 10,100 gt St Vincent registered bulker ("Agios Fanourios") at Maydon Wharf, Durban, reported that while the crew were occupied an elderly man, dressed as a wharf worker, boarded the vessel, entered the engineer’s cabin and stole cash and personal effects.

SOUTH CHINA SEA/GULF OF THAILAND

#8 January 2000 – A 744 gt Vanuatu flag tug ("Julie Tide") reported persons attempting to board the vessel in the Gulf of Thailand at 08.10N: 102.41E.

#3 June 2000 – A 14,200 gt Indian flag general cargo ship ("State of Tripura") in the South China Sea at 18.52N: 118.44E reported an unsuccessful attempted boarding by persons from a radar-equipped, unnamed, modern high-speed craft with a dark green hull.

#31 July 2000 – A 15,900 gt St Vincent registered RoRo ("Lima") on passage in the South China Sea at 10.47N: 109.56E reported being approached by two high-speed boats. The ship fired signal rockets and activated high-pressure water jets and the boats retreated.

#5 August 2000 – A 22,200 gt Malaysian registered bulk carrier ("Alam Progresso") on passage in the South China Sea at 10.46N: 110.28E reported a close approach by two speed boats. The alarm was raised and the boats veered off.

11 August 2000 – While on passage in the South China Sea at 11.00N: 110.46E a 14,400 gt Thai registered general cargo ship ("Suchada Naree") reported being approached by one speedboat. The duty officer switched on all deck lightings and the boat retreated.

#18 September 2000 – A 66,000 gt Bermuda registered tanker ("British Skill") reported being approached by a unlit, unidentified craft while on passage in the South China Sea at 07.04N: 108.06E. Lights were directed at the craft which veered off.

#4 October 2000 – A container ship on passage in the South China Sea at 19.29N: 113.42E, reported being approached by a high-speed craft. The crew were alerted but the craft altered course and cleared the area. The craft had a dark hull, low freeboard, round portholes, radar, 12 lube oil drums - six on each side, no markings, numbers or flag.

#25 October 2000 – An 18,600 gt St Vincent registered bulker ("Algoa Bay" reported being boarded while underway in the Gulf of Thailand at 09.13N: 102.29E. One life raft was stolen.

#8 December 2000 – A Singapore registered 8,400 gt container ship ("Kiti Bhum") underway in the South China Sea at 01.46N: 108.36E reported being approached by an unlit boat. The lights were switched on and no boarding was attempted.

SRI LANKA

Anti-Piracy Measures – In January 2000, the Colombo Port Authority started to post military personnel on certain ships overnight as an anti-piracy measure.

#2 January 2000 – A 10,880 gt Singapore registered container vessel ("Sinar Java") reported being boarded by several persons armed with guns while at anchor off Colombo. Part of the cargo including clothing and fruit was stolen. The Sri Lankan police were able to arrest four of the perpetrators.

#31 May 2000 – A 21,300 gt Malaysian registered container ship (("Bunga Teratai 4") reported being boarded by armed persons from a motor boat while at anchor in Colombo. A container was broken into and items stolen.

#26 June 2000 – A 1800 gt Sri Lankan registered general cargo vessel ("Mercs Uhana") on passage from Colombo to Jaffna, 50 nautical miles ENE of Point Pedro, Sri Lanka, was attacked by several small boats of which one, loaded with explosives, rammed into the ship's side, causing a hole in the hull and flooding of the engine room. The resulting fire burnt the ship's superstructure and cargo in the adjacent hold. The vessel sank in the late evening. 22 of the crew managed to escape but 5 are still missing.

12 October 2000 - A 40 ft fishing boat operated by motor and sail approached a U.S. naval ship ("Bowditch") in international waters off the east coast of Sri Lanka. The fishing boat came within 20 ft of the warship and her crew demanded money from the warship's crew. Two persons in the boat appeared to be concealing weapons in their waistbands. The warship's crew displayed small arms and the fishing boat retreated.

TANZANIA

#22 March 2000 – A French registered 25,100 gt tanker ("Captain Ann") at anchor at Dar Es Salaam reported being approached from the stern by an unlit boat with five persons on board. The boat was detected by ship's watchman during his rounds. The bridge duty officer directed a search light on the boat and alerted crew members. Sensing that crew were aware of its presence, the boat moved away.

#19 July 2000 - A 3,100 gt Panama registered tanker ("Amer Oil") at Dar-es-Salaam Anchorage, reported being boarded by five persons armed with knives via the anchor chain from an eight meter long, small, white, unlit motor boat, manned by three accomplices. The crew raised the alarm but the thieves broke into the store and stole ship's stores. They jumped overboard and escaped in their motor boat.

THAILAND

#12 January 2000 – A 36,400 gt Panama flag bulker ("Noble Star") reported persons attempting to board the vessel while underway off Kohsichang.

#30 April 2000 – A Liberian registered 24,000 gt bulker ("Cape Cornwall") reported being boarded by three persons while at anchor off Kohsichang at 13.13N: 100.52E. The alarm was raised and the boarders left the ship on a wooden speedboat around 10m in length.

#7 May 2000 – A 34,200 gt Greek registered bulker ("Maria") reported being boarded while loading at anchor at Kosichang. The forecastle stores were broken into and items stolen.

#21 June 2000 – A 37,500 gt Liberian registered container vessel (P&O Nedlloyd Chicago") reported being boarded by three persons via the anchor chain at Laem Chabang. The alarm was raised and the boarders jumped over the side.

#30 June 2000 – A 23,600 gt Panama flag bulker ("Cape Cornwall") at anchor at Kosichang reported an attempted boarding via the anchor chain. The alarm was raised and the attempt aborted.

#12 July 2000 – An 18,800 gt Maltese registered general cargo vessel ("Ever Happy") at Kohsichang roads reported being boarded by four persons via the port anchor chain while the vessel was loading cargo. A stevedore noticed the boarders, the alarm was raised and they escaped in a small boat.

#10 August 2000 – A 10,900 gt Liberian registered container vessel ("Cape Scott") at Laemchabang anchorage, reported being boarded by five persons armed with knives who broke into paint locker. The alarm was raised and the boarders left the vessel.

#18 September 2000 – A 3,400 gt Panama registered LPG ("Libra Gas") reported being boarded by two armed persons while at anchor off Sri Racha. They jumped over the side to a waiting boat when the alarm was raised.

#3 October 2000 – A 12,900 gt Philippine registered timber carrier ("Handy Dragon") at anchor at Kohsichang (13.08N: 100.51E) reported that persons armed with knives boarded the vessel and stole ship’s stores.

TOGO

#28 August 2000 – A 57,150 gt Cyprus flag tanker ("Nordstrength") reported being boarded while off Lome at 06.02N: 001.16E. The forecastle store was broken into and a fireman’s outfit, a mooring rope and a breathing apparatus set (around US$6,000 worth) of ship’s stores stolen.

UNITED ARAB EMIRATES

#28 November 2000 – A 13,600 gt Panama registered LPG carrier ("Yuhsho") at anchor at 25.03N: 056.28E, 5.8nm from Kalba breakwater, off UAE coast reported that four persons from a small craft attempted to board by throwing a line with hooks over the rail. The crew deployed high pressure water jets at the attempted boarding was aborted. The small craft had an outboard motor, 7-8 meters long, 2 meters wide with white hull and red stripes.

USA

#2 March 2000 – A 16,500 gt Bahamas flag bulk carrier ("Alikrater") at Port Newark, USA reported being boarded by two persons armed with guns who broke into chief mate's cabin. They threatened him with a gun and stole his personal belongings and cash. They tried to open master's and chief engineer's cabins without success.

VENEZUELA

#28 April 2000 – An Antigua & Barbuda registered 7,400 gt container vessel ("Alexandra") reported being boarded by at least four persons while at anchor off Guanta (10.16N: 064.34W). Two reefer containers were opened and the contents of one, consigned for Miami, were disturbed. 22 cases of frozen shrimp were stolen. A search to see if any drugs had been planted was conducted.

#3 July 2000 – A 6,200 gt Panama registered general cargo vessel (ATL Endurance") alongside at Guanta reported being boarded by six persons armed with knives and carrying bolt cutters. Holding a crew member at knife point they opened three containers removing several cartons before being seen by the duty officer and the alarm raised. They left the ship via a motor boat.

#2 August 2000 – A 14,700 gt Cyprus flag bulker ("Brooknes") reported being boarded by an armed robber while at anchor at Pertigalete Bay. A watchman was knocked down while trying to lock a deck store. Six lifejackets, two life rafts, lifeboat equipment and some wood were taken before the alarm was raised and the crew mustered on deck.

VIETNAM

#22 February 2000 – A 4,700 gt Singapore flag tanker ("Orchid"), discharging at the PTSC terminal, Vungtau, reported being boarded by one person armed with a long knife. Two other persons remained in a motorboat near the tanker's bow. The duty AB was threatened and ship's stores stolen. A security guard raised the alarm and the boarder jumped overboard and escaped in the waiting motorboat.

#3 May 2000 – A duty watchman on a 3,500 gt Hong Kong, China registered LPG tanker ("Kelso") at Vung Tau Anchorage, noticed two persons wearing blue overalls - similar to the ones issued to the crew - on the forecastle deck. He saw that the two persons were boarders armed with knives. The bridge was informed and the alarm raised. The chief officer led a team to the forecastle deck but the boarders had left, stealing some ship's stores.

#19 August 2000 – A 5,700 gt Malaysian registered tanker ("Bunga Kelana Dua") reported being boarded by armed persons while at anchor at Vung Tau. They were seen by the crew, the alarm was raised and the boarders left the vessel.

#19 August 2000 – A 2,700 gt Malaysian registered container ship ("Nepline Terati") reported being boarded from a boat by five persons armed with iron bars while alongside at Ho Chi Minh (10.46N: 106.44E). Two crew members were threatened as safety equipment and ship’s stores were stolen.

#27 August 2000 – A 7,900 gt Panama registered bulk carrier ("Paulina") at Vung Tau anchorage reported being boarded by one person via the anchor chain whilst an accomplice remained in a boat below. The duty a/b saw the boarder, raised the alarm and the boarder jumped into the water and escaped.

#24 October 2000 - The duty officer on a 2000gt Liberian registered LPG carrier ("Lady Eline") at Haiphong, noticed two persons trying to open the forecastle store. He raised the alarm and the crew were mustered. On seeing the crew the boarders climbed down into their boat using own rope and escaped.

YEMEN

12 October 2000 – A US naval vessel ("Cole") at Aden anchorage was rammed by a boat containing explosives. 17 seamen were killed and 32 injured in the resulting explosion.
