Safe Transport of Containers by Sea

First Edition (ISC/WSC) £80.00

These new Guidelines have been published, in co-operation with the World Shipping Council, with a view to minimising the dangers to containerships, their crews, and all personnel involved with containers throughout the transport chain.  They have been developed by an expert international industry working group in response to recent incidents involving containerships. The Guidelines recognise the safety responsibilities of ship operators, but also discuss the responsibilities of those involved with the correct packing and stuffing of the cargo into containers, the accurate labelling and declaration of the goods by cargo interests, and the weighing of loaded containers. In addition, they address the safe handling and stowage of containers when they are received by a port facility and are loaded on board a ship, and also cover the maintenance and inspection of the containers themselves.

The ISF Marlins
English Language Test

New single price:

all tests only US$10.00 each

order from Marlins info@marlins.co.uk.

The ISF Marlins English Language Test is an online assessment tool which tests seafarers’ understanding of both written and spoken English.

Use of the ISF Marlins English Language Test allows ship operators to demonstrate that seafarers, of whatever nationality, have been assessed on their ability to communicate in English, a necessity that has been given additional emphasis by the ISM Code and the revised STCW Convention.

The new online version of the test features a completely fresh database of questions as well as several new question types.  Test users get the chance to practice each question type before they start the test and help information is available in 11 languages.  A certificate of the user’s result can be printed out at the end of the test.

The test is applicable to all nationalities and grades of officers and ratings (including catering and hotel personnel) and focuses on the seafarers’ understanding of English as opposed to their “seamanship” skills.

The online test also allows larger companies with several test sites to manage the purchase and distribution of tests through one central account.  A powerful new reporting feature allows reports to be compiled on purchase history, test balance and test results, and enables searches for individual test results.

Marlins can provide interviewers with training in the implementation of the Test of Spoken English. The aim of the training day is to help interviewers to standardise assessment and grading, in line with recommended procedures.

The Good Practice series of A4 posters is designed to encourage a safety and loss prevention environment onboard vessels and to draw attention to everyday occurrences that could lead to a potential claim. The UK Club’s ship inspectors visit approximately 600 vessels annually, and all the photos featured are taken by them on such inspections. Approximately 60% of claims seen by the Club are attributable, in varying degrees, to human error. Some photos  illustrated under the title ‘Bad practice’ are not necessarily bad, but when compared to the ‘Good Practice’ photo, it is clear improvements could be made to reduce risks of claims.

The posters are usually used on notice boards and also placed where the subject of the poster is located on the vessel. Subjects covered include cargo hold access, paint locker storage and sight glasses, etc.
